Why not put it this way....if you love good rock music.....like to see a band that plays their own style regardless ........love to hear a guitarist with soul and originality, yet gives you goose bumps with screaming harmonics and melodious tunes and still gives you a $#%$n' great smile and looks like he or she is absolutely enjoying what they are doing........and sounds awesome!(great tone)......and you have seen, heard, felt or breathed van halen music and haven't been inspired, motivated or touched in some way by it........need I say more?

All the hair bands ripped Eddie off, but the guy who did the best job of copying his style and sound was probably Vito Bratta. He even looked kind of like Ed. I'm not a big White Lion fan, but you can't deny Vito's talent.

Vai and Satriani poseurs and clones, with no soul?
You ought to do your homework a bit better.
As far as instruments go, they're both more talented and there's no cloning at all.
Vai can appear to be flashy cause he's so damn good that he makes a lot of it look effortless even though a lot of work goes into his music.
If you think there's just flash in their music then you haven't been listening.
I agree that a lot of bands copied Ed's style over the years, but Satriani and Vai aren't in that category. They might throw a run or two in here or there that sounds like Ed might have done, but that's where it ends.
Ed's style of playing has become very repetitious over time, and you can't say that everyone who uses a whammy or plays a pattern that Ed plays is a clone.
Did you see the videos of Ed playing onstage with Ritchie Sambora?
It was almost sad to watch. The same old runs, which didn't fit the music.
It'd be interesting to see Ed play some of Vai's material.

Good post! Yeah, what he said...

Vai = "no soul or emotion"?! A. You're OBVIOUSLY not a guitarist. B. You've obviously never heard tunes like "For the Love of God", "Tender Surrender" or about 50 other Vai songs I could list. C. You've obviously never seen any of these guys live.

As for who has "ripped off" Ed, you could name just about anybody who has come along since, just as you could those who came after guys like Hendrix, Page, Beck & Clapton. There's nothing wrong with being influenced by someone, everyone is, so long as you can use it to create some good MUSIC. Just for the hell of it, though, Vito Bratta and Nuno Bettancourt probably display a more prominent tip of the hat to Ed in their own styles than just about anyone, and both are GREAT players. (although I'm also not the biggest White Lion fan in the world...) Shit, if I could "rip off" Eddie enough to sound EXACTLY like him circa about 1981, I'd do it in a heartbeat and tell everyone to kiss my ass!

Go listen to Satriani's song called Rubina and then write this post again.

Please....and Ed didn't use Holdsworth lines note-for-note in the early 80s.

Sure plenty of poor hair-metal clones, and Ed is unique, but it was his chemistry in songwriting with Dave that made him stand above the crowd.

If you want to talk about speed, go ask Frank Gambale or Tony Macalpine for some hints.

so vai & satriani are not derivative of evh..?

tapping , whammy bar histrionics , harmonics.. i've seen both live and they are a total hack job of ed's chops..

satriani is the worst offender , at least vai does some unique stuff occasionally.. just not lately..

liked vai's work on skyscraper, though..

Look, Eddie changed EVERYTHING. Whether or not he invented every technique he used isn't the point.
What he did do was blend all of it into some of the most innovative, catchy and damned amazing sounding recorded and live performance. He also changed the buisness of guitars, and he also had a huge hand in changing the technology of the guitar with his custom work to his amps and axes.

The Floyd Rose bridge would never have wound up becoming what it is without Ed's input. (The locking nut.)

That said, Satch and Vai are amazing players in their own right. You can't take that away from them. The problem is, when someone as gifted as Eddie comes along and totally raises the bar, most of the other contributions made by other gifted players pale in comparison.

Satch, Vai, and Stevie Ray have made awesome contributions to the world of guitar. And don't forget The Edge and Dave Gilmour - two of the most underrated innovators to ever lay hands on a six string....

none. it takes too much effort to become good enough to play more than power chords. besides, nowadays you don't have to know jack about playing - it's all in the editor's hands at the studio. the music industry has perfected the process of gold plating a turd.

    Me

    As for the Vai/Satriani comparisons...
I honestly don't think they sound anything like Ed.
If I did, I'd have more of their records

Do you guys really believe that Ed did all these techniques first, hidden away in his bedroom or something?

Plenty of guys were doing all these things not only at the same time but prior. True, Ed put it all together to make a sound all his own, but so did other guys. Ed rose to the top because of the SONG WRITING he did with Roth. If Gene Simmons had his way and put Ed in Kiss in 1976, this site and these conversations would probably not exist. We'd know of Ed like we know of Alvin Lee.
