    Default AS IS Tuning question

Anybody figured out the tuning for As Is? I've seen conflicting reports.

From that guy's thread where I posted the link: "It's also important to be in the correct tuning, which for this song is B, Bb, Eb, Ab, C, F. You can play it out of an Eb tuning, but it's much more difficult and you loose the "drop B" feeling." That's a pretty wild tuning, never heard of raising pitch a half step on those five strings. But his youtube clip is quite convincing with that drop B.

    What you posted isn't drop-B!
Drop-B as I understand it is: (low to high) B-F#-B-D#-G#-C#, Whch sounds about right for this tune. I have the tab for Eb and it's a pain in the ass!

Edit: Thats the tuning posted in the video (That you quoted)....I agree, It's a strange assed tuning but seems legit for the tune.

The Eb tab sucks, it's too hard.

Drop B can also be BADGBE. On that note, a song tuned a half step up and then dropped to be seems insane. lol. That's why I had to ask around. I wish they'd release a tab book already. I have pretty good ears. But when the tuning's this weird, it kind of fucks with me. I can find the notes, but the way I was playing it seemed crazy considering I've seen Ed do it mostly open.

I haven't really looked at it yet, so I can't give a comment on quality, but the tab I have just has a half step down tuning.

I use a capo like this guy:

I standard tune to Eb, capo on the second fret. No drops. Anyone consider Wolfie covering the low end with the bass?

Yeah I put the capo on and did it like that guy...MUCH easier. I'm not convinced Ed didn't do it that way.

Haven't heard of them rehearsing this one in sound check, but crossing fingers. Let Ed play it live and give us all a guitar lesson. Reminds me of The Rain Song, not musically of course, but with regard to tuning. You can kill yourself trying to play it in a standard tuning, but when you see Page play it live you understand it better, and his live version was even different from the recorded version.

Hey guys - I'm the one that posted the original link referred to above. You can play it out of Eb, and that's where I originally started when learning the song. Without a capo, it's just hard, and I'm sure Eddie didn't use a capo on record. I did learn it pretty well that way, but it just never seemed right. It sounds better when you do pull offs to open strings. Playing it in Eb you won't have that.

If you watch the Two and a Half Men clip, he plays the riff there in an open position with the Drop To Hell bridge on the guitar, so I figured he's probably playing it the same way on the record. But for some reason they tuned up out of Eb a whole step. No idea why, maybe for vocals or something, who knows.

Two and a Half Men clip:

When I learned the song I stripped the vocals, then cut out all the frequencies that the bass usually takes up. The result is a pretty clean guitar track with some drums (snare, cymbals) present. I just listened for Eddie's low note and tuned to it. Took a while but eventually settled on B. I hear the Drop To Hell goes all the way down to an A, so I figured that was probably the lowest possibility. Nothing else sounded right except the B.

I'm pretty sure Wolfie isn't covering that low note, though he does play along on the intro and after the solo. Without him in the mix, the note is still there.

Can't wait for the tab book.

I'm pretty positive you nailed it after dissecting what you videoed.

I'll still stick with the capo/no tuning tweaks out of pure, unfettered laziness.
