Default How did the band suddenly get everything right?

Ok, we know what it's been like to be a Van Halen fan these past however many years. It seemed like they could not do anything right. How is it that in 2012, they've suddenly done just about everything right:

New Album--Let's face it, many of us didn't think we'd ever get a new album from Van Halen again. Further, there were some serious questions over how good it would be anyways. Well, we got the new album and it's been universally praised. (It kicks some serious ass).

2012 Tour--A pretty common complaint about Van Halen--even stretching back to the 80's and 90's--was that they didn't change their sets up and they didn't play many deep cuts for the fans. Well, Women In love, Outta Love Again, Girl Gone Bad, Hear About It Later, The Full Bug, Hang Em High, rumor of Drop Dead Legs in soundcheck, different set just about every night...Wow!

Fan Experience--How about exclusive video content for this site and others? Invites to private shows for members of this site? Allowing videotaping at all the shows. New VHBlast site. They've really reached out to their hard core fans, and embraced the internet communities.

So, who do you think is the driving force here? How did they suddenly start doing so much, so right?

Just get them on Leno, Letterman and Conan to promote their album like other bands do to get it to move more units ...

Ed getting sober first and foremost.

Add Ed's best friend (Al), his oldest friend (Dave) and his son as a support unit getting the man back to what he and they all love doing most... playing and making music, and the cards start to fall into place. The band hit rock bottom in 2004 because it was no longer fun anymore... everything was business, and I'm sure no matter what certain individuals might say, it was not about the music anymore. Van Halen is and has become a family again that truly looks like they enjoy what they do for a living... all over again.

I'm gonna say that Dave and Wolf might have a lot do with the new fan friendly version of the band more than anything else. Wolf probably has a good idea of how things get done these days, and Dave just simply needs the chance to do something... anything. I just think they all came to the conclusion that if they were going to do anything, they had to do it right or not at all.

I really don't know I guess... I'm just babbling away here, erasing paragraphs and starting over. I'll throw this out there and see if people agree or not or can add to it.

Well IMO They didn't suddenly get everything right This album and tour were four years in the making, and fucking A for that

There was a four year lay-off between 2008 and 2012. In that time, Eddie found, among other things, sobriety (first and foremost), and with that, a new found peace of mind. He is genuinely a changed man now. Kudos to him.

Wolfgang, mate, that guy... among other things like graduating highschool, did some serious woodshedding in those four years. It shows.

Dave looked after his voice (apart from those damn cigarettes) and had vocal tutoring prior to the album work. Also, while this album was in its infancy (Ross H. talked about sitting down with DLR and EVH and listening to old demos at 5150) , one could safely speculate a whole bunch of fence mending went on between Dave and Eddie. They seem like genuine friends now. I seriously doubt that its all for show.
    Al.... was Al.

Reconnecting with the fan base began as early as 2010, when Janie(??) tipped off Brett about the George Lopez show. Regrettably, that fell flat on its face ... does anyone remember THIS thread?!

Roughly two months later, we got wind that the band were in the studio.

It would be a good bet to say someone in or close to the band was lurking here..... Probably not all the time, but someone was here nonetheless. One only has to look at the setlists to see that they took the fans longings seriously. Kudos to them. It couldn't have been easy. Apathy was abound here on the links. People took great big shits on the band, especially after the Lopez incident and what happened at the Grammys. It would have been hard to read - Thats why I've linked those two threads.... they are but a snapshot of the attitude on the links here throughout 2010 and into 2011. That attitude only really started to change on December 26, 2011 with this new album and tour announcement, taken from VHND.

    That's my 2 cents

EDIT: This is kind of a history lesson for the new linkers who didn't really come to the site prior to 2012.

EDIT EDIT: Ah crap I see that many other posters have already covered what I posted.... I hope the links provided are an entertaining example of life on the boards in 2010 and 2011

Default Because of Wolf and Sober Ed

I've just about worshiped this band since 1979. Granted in the early days, Ed was drinking, but for the most part it hadn't affected his playing until the early 80's, after the Fair Warning era. Every record and every live clip I've seen of them since 82, it just seemed like that magic was gone. Look at any clip from the 90's. Ed could barely play anymore because he was too drunk. And 2004 was just plain awful, let's face it. It was an embarrassing mess. Frightening to see, and quite frankly was a huge suck-fest.

Ed's drinking was what was behind the destruction of this band. And now in 2012 when I see clips of Eddie play, his playing is magical once again, he's nailing those old solos and is playing them very fast and clean. I can't believe how amazing of a player he really still is. I'm so glad that he managed to kick the booze, because that was the only way his amazing playing was coming back.

Also, while to me, Mike will always be a part of VH, I credit Wolf for the regeneration and infusion of spirit and new energy this band needed in order for this to work. I've accepted Wolf as a member, and I appreciate everything he has done to make VH go back and dust off these old songs and play them right.

Forgot to add Valerie and Janie to the mix. I'm guessing structured, loving, trusted or busted family environments. Behind every great man stuff.

I think VH simply came back to reality. In order to thrive and be fulfilled in the music biz, bands must do it simply for the passion of the music and have the desire to share it with the fans.
