    Default The Doobie Brothers

    from billboard.com:

Longtime Doobie Brothers drummer Michael Hossack has died at age 65. The band's manager, Bruce Cohn, said in a statement that Hossack died of cancer on Monday in his home in Dubois, Wyo.

Affectionately known as "Big Mike," Hossack played with the group from 1971 to 1974 and rejoined in 1987. His drumming can be heard on early hits including "Listen To The Music," "China Grove" and "Blackwater." (sic) He stopped performing with the band two years ago while struggling with cancer.

Doobie Brothers co-founder Tom Johnston said, "Mike has always been a part of my musical life and the life of the Doobie Brothers ... He was an incredible musician."

Hossack received some unwanted attention in 2008 when a Nevada man named Michael Rogers was arrested after years of impersonating the drummer. Commenters on DoobieBrothers.net recall Rogers hanging out in bars, scamming drinks.

Hossack grew up in New Jersey and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He is survived by a son and daughter.

can't believe there wasn't already some kind of Doobie Brothers thread - what a heck of a way to start it...

    Rest in Peace, "Big Mike"

Heck of a drummer. Steady as she goes but with a groove. Rest well, Big Mike.

Last summer I bought most of the pre-breakup Doobie Brothers albums (which I've had on vinyl since saving them from the WRKS record library in '84) and bought the rest this January (except One Step Closer which oddly seems to be out of print), and in order to catch the songs up to the tracks from the two Best Of albums that have been on my iPod for quite awhile, I have a playlist with just those "deep" cuts. Gotta say, I've been digging those songs quite a bit. I think someone posted it in another thread, but The Captain And Me is one of the standouts, with the title track, "Ukiah", "Evil Woman" & "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" bolstering faves such as "China Grove", "Long Train Running", "South City Midnight Lady" & "Without You". Stampede has always been a favorite as well with "I Cheat The Hangman". But so many great tracks on all of the records, and lots of different styles. Probably plow into the reunion albums at some point, but for now, going to keep getting to know the original run of this great, unsung American band!

The pre breakup version of DB was the only version imo.

Why do you feel that way? I only heard Cycles once a long time ago, but the principle players - Tom, Pat, Tiran, John Hartman and Michael Hossack are there, plus a lot of the side players they'd used on their earlier albums help out, and the same principles made Brotherhood.

    Probably my favorite Doobie's song.

I love the imagery the song portrays.

Very Americana to me and I'm always a sucker for steel guitar.

Question for Doobie fans: was Michael McDonald the Sammy Hagar of the Doobies?

The two bands do share several links.

I don't know how fans used to feel back in the day, but there was a time when I hated Michael McDonald, going so far as to call him the "anti-Doobie", even though he was behind one of my favourite songs ever - "Takin' It To The Streets". I've softened some, although I still enjoy the Tom Johnston albums better. But such a different dynamic with Michael McDonald, hard to even compare it to Van Halen, because except for the occasions when Eddie wheeled out the keyboards, Van Halen with Sammy Hagar still had a lot in common with the original version whereas the Doobies with McDonald sounded very different quite often (though there were still flashes of the old Doobies in songs such as "Dependin' On You")

I hate Michael McDonald with every fiber of my being. He is one person who makes me want to break shit when I hear him sing. Plus, he puts out an album every 39 minutes it seems and it's just over saturation.

Between him and Geddy Lee I mega loathe both of them.

Yeah, but I never cared as much about the Doobies as I do about VH.

Michael McDonald brought a more adult contemporary sound and vibe to the Doobies. It was a big change... I like "Takin it to the Streets" ok, but dont love that version of the band. Glad Tom Johnston came back; that is where they get their rockin edge and the salt of the earth sound...
