Default Rick Santorum: "We can't have 50 different marriage laws"

"We can't have 50 different marriage laws in this country," he said. "You have to have one marriage law."

There are 18,000 married gay and lesbian couples in California and at least 131,000 nationwide according to the 2010 census, conducted before New York state legalized same-sex marriage in July.

Rick Santorum says he'll try to unmarry all of them if he's elected president.

Once the U.S. Constitution is amended to prohibit same-gender marriages, "their marriage would be invalid," the former Pennsylvania senator said Dec. 30 in an NBC News interview.

"We can't have 50 different marriage laws in this country," he said. "You have to have one marriage law."

The comments didn't attract nearly as much attention as Santorum's recent invocation of his Catholic faith to denounce government support for birth control, prenatal testing and resource conservation - which, in the last case, he attributed to President Obama's "phony theology."

But his declared intention to nullify past as well as future same-sex marriages has reinforced his position to the right of the other Republican contenders, even though each of them has also voiced fervent support for traditional unions.

Santorum was a United States Senator, correct? Meaning he was part of the branch of government whose charge is to craft legislation.

As the Constitution makes clear, the President is part of the Executive Branch. The president can sign or veto legislation.

    Oh, never mind.

This has so many layers of stupid, I wouldn't know when to stop peeling.

As far as I'm concerned, that's nothing the Federal Government should have any say in to begin with....and I doubt that assclown flapping his gums about "unmarrying" people is going to win him any votes.....there are much bigger issues in this country than whether gays should be allowed to get married or not....truly, I have no idea why this is even an issue...if they want to get married, where does anyone have the right to tell them no? This is so fucking stupid and this guy should just shut the fuck up......

    DITTO!

I think its rather ironic that these presidential candidates are always preaching about how government should play a smaller role in peoples lives...BUT...if you are a gay or lesbian couple, the government is going to intervene all the fuck it wants just to make your life a living hell.

As for Santorum, this guy is clearly off his fucking rocker. His 19th century ideology will never mix with 21st culture and IF he is elected president, be prepared to live in an Amish paradise.

I love this guy, not because I agree with him, but because he perpetuates the ignorance many foreign countries see us as having.

I'd like to sit down and have a conversation with him.

i actually agree with him that it's stupid that a gay couple can get married in one state and not be able to get married in the next state over. That's ridiculous. There should be a uniform policy across the country.

Fair point. It really seems like the federal government wants no part of this, thus leaving it to the states to decide. As Republicans are big on states' rights, I find it odd why they want to regulate marriage nationally. The many mysteries of politics I guess.

So, Mr. Canadian...do you think Arizona or California should have the same immigration policy as Virginia? I say no, each state is individual and the constitution (outdated as fuck) should be the guideline for policy.

yes, i think they should. You are one country and all. Can you imagine how much fun it would be as a tourist if for instance I wanted to drive to Florida but the states of Georgia and Alabama had a law that stated that no foreign car was allowed in their state? Be kind of ridiculous, don't you think?

I don't agree with this. Should a gay couple, or anybody for that matter, be restricted to specific states because the laws are so different?

As an outsider, it seems like a bunch of politicians with no balls. So you can get married in North Carolina (I have no idea which states allow it this is just an example) but if you move to South Carolina your marriage is null and void? At some point your federal govt has to make a decision one way or the other, at least that's what happened here in 2005 I think.
