Default Van Halen: Time to step up the promotion for ADKOT

Seeing that ADKOT is holding steady in the top 10 of CURRENT albums for a month it's showing that the band still has staying power on the charts. I just want the band to start promoting this album more. It's going to be tough while they are on tour but I think the band needs to really consider dropping the no interviews/promotion policy they have now and get together and come up with ways to make this album really start to roll.

Here is what I think needs to be done in the coming months.

*Make another music video, hire a professional to put together a real video not something that is a half ass effort. Maybe release a Blood and Fire video and mix current clips of the band with classic footage, include backstage footage of the guys. Kind of a full circle video like the song is written about. Make it a feel good video of why people fell in love with the band in the first place.

*Let Dave do a few talk shows. Conan, Letterman, Leno it doesn't matter. The band performing on SNL would be the best choice but with the tour that probably won't happen with schedules. Dave could do an interview for a late night show on a day off of the tour easily. Schedule something when there is a 3 day break or something. If at all possible when the band hits LA, do some TV gigs of any kind!!

*Please drop the no interviews with magazines. Even if they have to put restrictions on certain topics being asked, Eddie needs to start doing some press. Talk up the new album!! Let Wolf do some interviews speaking about his playing on his first album...really anything.. they need to do some press.

*Interscope or the band's management needs to spend a little more money on advertising. Put up more ads on heavy visited websites. Put up some more billboards. Heck try and work out a deal with Clear Channel to pump the new songs on radio.

*Keep the online videos coming. The interviews Dave did with Ed and Alex are pure gold! Make sure to link these videos to many differnet websites to get the most views.

ADKOT is an album the fans love and the band should be very proud of it. It's high time for a little more effort to be made to get the masses to know how good it is and get some people who might still be on the fence to buy it. It would be worth the effort I think!

as long as it doesn't mess with the guys getting along, i'm in. i think they're trying to stay out of interviews so old, messy subjects don't come up. the videos and Interscope doing advertising seems like a no-brainer to me, but i really have no idea how the music bus. works. i thought they should have pumped some advertising around the Superbowl. album came out 2 days later. that would have been the perfect time.

    I think it's unnecessary.
Doing interviews is a bad idea. Someones bound to say something to offend someone else.
Videos? Who plays videos nowdays? A waste of Money in my opinion.
Make a deal with clear channel? Ever hear the term payola?
The people who are gonna buy the album already know it's available.
There's only so much market for classic style rock.

I agree with the opening post. Doesn't seem like a bad idea.

I agree. The economics of the music industry have changed. Fans are worried about the traditional sales data techniques when in reality the band is looking strictly at what their profits vs expenses is. With a major label the overall revenue may be much much higher, but the band makes a fraction of what they could without a traditional/oldschool label deal.

    Hypothetical
With a traditional record deal with all it's expenses, fees, recoupable costs, etc: Overall Revenue $110m
Van Halen gets $10m Record Company gets $100m

With a VH friendly record deal where they call more of the shots, decide on promotion costs:Overall Revenue $50m
Van Halen gets $25m Record Company gets $25m

I'll take plan b please. I don't care if I move less units.

Interviews may or not be a good thing. I don't see why a performance on late night wasn't already booked. Not much can go wrong there.

Well I guess making posts about something positive about the band and the album is a no no. Tired of all the Sam vs. Dave shit! So I decided to actually try and come up with some constructive for us to talk about. And seeing how the album is still charting good there is some market for the classic rock style! Hey if the band doesn't want to do promotion that's too bad. They really have something great here to promote. I was just trying to point it out.

    Yo brotha
Just offering my opinion. Just like you did. If everyone agreed on everything there wouldn't be anything to discuss. It's not personal.

Its a function of the way things are in the 21st century music biz. No matter how much they promote, the album only has so much upside as rock albums just don't rule the charts anymore. Interscope is going to promote the bands that are in markets where kids still buy lots of product. Classic rock just doesn't really sell. It doesn't matter that its a great album..that didn't even matter back in the day. People bought because it was VH. That's no longer true. Now the money is made on tour and I think they're doing pretty well there. I think the interview thing was more the choice of the VH brothers to avoid any DLR comments that might piss them off. The best way to control the message (or lack thereof) when you're dealing with Dave is to prevent him from talking. Just my take anyway.

He's not being a downer. He's just commenting on your ideas. What? Do you expect everyone to just agree with you? I think people more or less find your ideas good, they're just suggesting some other avenues. It doesn't mean they're trying to derail the thread.

Promote it to who? This kind of music is not in style today. The youngsters that buy records that listen to rock would consider this album dinosaur rock. The ones that listen to rap crap or Lady CaCa ain't gonna buy it. They ones who go to the shows and / or buy the records already know about it. Promotion is to bring in new fans. I just don't see this happening.

I agree, think most of the people who are interested, already have it or are gonna pick it up soon.
