    Default Sammy and Jerry Garcia

I came across this video while searching for footage of Sammy's performance with Bob Weir and Mickey Hart from back in 2010.

This is from April 1989 at the (original) Sweetwater Saloon in Mill Valley, CA. I knew Sammy was a long-time Grateful Dead fan (I recall VH played Letterman the evening Jerry died and Sammy finished the performance by saying "peace to Jerry Garcia").

I was not aware they ever performed together. As a longtime fan of both Sammy and Jerry, this is glorious! I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.

Even if you don't like Sam, anyone with ears has to admit the man can wail at the mic.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

At the beginning, was that Elvis Costello on the right side?

Funny, I never noticed the similarities between "Going Down" and "Bigfoot" until just now. No wonder why it felt so familiar when I first heard it.

Now that you mention it, I am immediately hearing the similarities!

And that performance is awesome. That is the definition of a JAM.

Yep. In fact, Jerry is playing Elvis's Jazzmaster.

That's cool. That was Sammy looking his coolest too. The voice? What is understood doesn't need to be discussed right? A perfect rock and roll voice.

I remember when VH played Hartford, CT in '95 just a few days or weeks after Jerry died and he talked about it between songs. I remember it well since I'm a huge Dead fan myself.

You and me both. EVH is the reason I picked up a guitar. Jerry Garcia is the reason I hung on to it.

One thing that's amazing as well is that Jerry looks old enough to be Sammy's dad, and they are only 5 years apart. In that video, Sammy is 42 and Jerry is 47. The dude has aged well.

Correction - VH played the Comcast Center (Tweeter Center/Great Woods) in Mansfield, Massachusetts on August 9, 1995. I was at the show. I saw at least one makeshift memorial to Jerry on bridges spanning the Massachusetts Turnpike headed to the show.

They did play Letterman the next night, at which the dedication was made. I believe they played Not Enough. Sammy also dedicated the same song to Jerry during the Mansfield show.

Anyway, nice find on the video. I've seen it before. Love Sammy with that hair.

Took a date to the Sweetwater one time in 2000, but alas - we didn't see anything nearly as cool as this.

Thanks for the clarification. I was living in the Chicago area (Evanston) at the time and had attended the final Dead show at Soldier Field on July 9. I was on a huge Dead kick from 1990 to 1995.

As goofy as it sounds, VH's performance on Letterman (and especially Sammy's nod to Jerry) revitalized my interest in Van Halen. I kind of rediscovered Balance in the fall of 1995.

    Jerry was amazing, period.
Wolfie is not Mike, but he's more than ok.
Mike is gone, but not forgotten. They played some amazing shows from 2007-2015; some people are in denial about it.
