Default Sammy Talks Van Halen [03.01.12]

Talked to Sammy today about a wide range of topics, and of course Van Halen was one of them. He said a bunch of positive things, which contrasted quite a bit with what we've been seeing lately in the press.

    Here are some highlights:

    * He hasn't heard the new album. Didn't like "Tattoo," one other song that he thought sounded "along the same lines" but liked "She's the Woman." He also said that it's taken too long.

    * Said he LOVES Ed and only wishes the best for him.

    * Still thinks Dave is "silly."

    * Still sore about Ray Daniels, said bringing Gary in was so Ed could have complete control.

    * Talked about "Numb to the Touch," and says there are about "five other songs in the can" that are unreleased. Said that music from one of them, "The Wish," was used on VH III and that he used the "concept" for on on CF III.

    * Wants to be playing in a band through his 70s.

    * Remember those yellow and red jumpsuits he wore back in the day? Those straps were completely functional.

Finally, you can be a Sam fan or a Dave fan, and maybe Sam needs to STFU, but he is without a doubt one of the nicest, most genuine, down-to-earth and relaxed guys I've encountered of that stature. I'm thinking that much of the bad-mouthing he does is the result of journos taking the juiciest parts of the interview and using them.

Nothing wrong with that, do you have a complete transcript?

He hasn't heard the new album?....I call bullshit. Sam just can't bring himself to admit the new album is great.

Eh, if he says he hasn't heard it, then I believe him. He's probably heard stuff that he has heard on the radio or if someone showed him/emailed him a track, but I don't think he or Mike rushed out to buy/listen to it. Do you think Michael Keaton rushed out to see Batman 3 with Kilmer or Terrance Howard to see Iron Man 2 with Cheadle? Probably not.

I think Sam gets a bum rap, and I also believe that once you give interviews in print, it can be construed to show any kind of "tone" the author wants. And what kind of tone sells? Let's just say not harmony and love.

Of course he has. He just doesn't want to have to answer questions like "oh so which one's do you like?" "what do you think of Dave's voice?" "what do you think of Wolfie vs. Mike", "What do you think of EVH vs. Satch", "What do you think of ADKOT vs. CFIII".....

Nothing particularly groundbreaking there. He's always thought Dave was silly and he's said he loved many times before.

This part does not make any sense. There is not one song on the album that sounds "along the same lines" as Tattoo.

If that's the case then Ed and Al have heard both CF albums. Explains why they don't want to do interviews.

Nice try. Ed/Al didn't say this:

"Are you kidding me? If you take Joe [Satriani] versus Eddie, you take Dave [Lee Roth] versus me, Wolfie [Wolfgang Van Halen] versus Mikey [Michael Anthony] , Chad [Smith] or Kenny [Aronoff, Chickenfoot's touring drummer] versus Al [Alex Van Halen]Ö I mean, come on! You know what I mean? Man for man, who can sing the best? Dave or I, today? Who can play the best? Joe or Eddie, today? Who could play or sing the best? Wolfie or Mikey?"
