I like Skolnick and overall I enjoyed this, thanks for the link.

I have to say though that when he mentions about the VHIII album and tour...

"It was painful. Anyone who were raved about the tour and album was in denial."

I was as disappointed in the album as most fans were but I wasn't in denial about thoroughly enjoying the tour. Eddie was playing great and between so many new songs and the fact that they were playing so many Roth VH songs the whole set at least felt really fresh. It was fun to see MA sing some of the old songs, too. Yeah, Cherone didn't really fit on stage but I don't have any regrets about going to the show at all.

I saw the III tour in Atlanta and it was awesome. Yeah, Gary dances weird, so what? Has anyone seen Dave dance lately (he's even doing the Gary squat)? If I want to see great dancing, I'll go to a Madonna concert or the Nutcracker.

Agreed. Nobody should feel like they have to apologize for enjoying VH III or the subsequent tour with Gary.

At least it was new stuff. Little did we know how long we would wait in between III and the next material (the 04 tunes don't really count)...if we had known, we woulda been more appreciative. Except for "How Many Say I"...that shit sucked big time lol.

Great read. I dig Skolnick, he's a great guitar player.

Interesting how many people have picked up on the fact that this tour, CD, and a rejuvenated Eddie, were made possible by Wolfgang.

One has to remember that even though Alex is an accomplished jazz guitarist, his roots are in Thrash metal. He still plays with Testament I think today so his views on Hagar and Gary will be like if one talks to Hetfield, Kerry King or Scott Ian. They all hated commercial town metal and anything similar to it.

Like it or not VH with Roth in their eyes is no different than Sabbath, Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin.

Anyway he is a cool guy to talk to if you ever have the chance. We shot the shit about Randy for about ten minutes before a show of his.

I just think the tour was interesting if for no other reason than it was the only VH tour ever to portray the entire VH catalog as being from the same band. There was a healthy mix featuring all three singers' albums. That'll never happen again.

I used to read his guitar magazine columns and he always seemed like he had a maturity and a larger perspective and appreciation of music in general than you normally find in thrash or speed metal or whatever type guys.

The only time I've ever seen him live was from the 3rd row in San Antonio on the (I think it was called) Masters of Metal tour I guess around 2008 or so. Testament, Motorhead, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath with Dio, or Heaven and Hell as they called themselves. Skolnick was fun to watch up close but for me I'll always remember getting to see Halford and Dio back to back from about 10 feet away. What a great time. It was Halford's birthday and the other bands came out at the end with cake and champagne and stuff. Really cool.

Very cool read. It seems that Eddie has really reasserted his place the Mt. Rushmore of rock.
It is so awesome to read/hear from Van Halen's peers gushing over our favorite bad!

I think that's why he left Testament in the early 90's.
He wanted to learn/play jazz and he moved to NYC in 1998 & went to school for it.
One of the guys in his jazz trio he met in class.

Last time i saw him was about a year ago while at dinner.

Ran into him and Eric Peterson at a restaurant in Berkeley, they were writing a new Testament album at the time.

Something I never understood about Skolnick, maybe you could help me. I always got the impression that he was just "moonlighting" if you will, at the Thrash genre. Is that where his true love lies, musically?
