    4 Octave wonders...Roth

Just saw this and found it amazing. There are only a few singers who have ever truly recorded 4 octaves of range, and DLR is one of them. Here I thought Sammy was the superior vocalist all of these years, 4 Octave Wonders

.Here are the few singers who TRULY have recorded four octaves' worth of full voice notes:

    1. David Lee Roth: G1 ("Slam Dunk!", from 1998, "If 6 Was 9", from 2003, and "Let It All Hang Out", from 2003) to G♯5 ("Big Train", from 1994)
    2. Peter Steele: E1 ("Haunted", from 1996) to E5 ("Black No.1 (Little Miss Scare-All)" live at the Bizarre Fest, from 1999)
    3. Dan Arlie: G1 ("Zoom Zoom" from 1993) to G5 ("Hit Squad", from 1992)
    4. Ville Valo: F1 ("Killing Loneliness" live Digital Versatile Doom, from 2007) to F5 ("Ode To Solitude", from 2010)
    5. Phil Anselmo: F♯1 ("Overthrown", from 2005) to F♯5 ("The Will to Survive", from 1989)
    6. Mark Slaughter: A1 ("Old Man", from 1992) to A5 ("Unknown Destination", from 1995)

It depends on what someone's idea of superior is. Dave has a wider range than anyone realizes because he starts so low on the scale. Most rock singers have a much higher starting point. lol

I have no idea what Sammy's actual range is, but he's a more consistent singer in a live situation compared to Dave. To some, that would equal a "superior" vocalist, even if he only had a 3 octave range.

But let me digress and suck Devin Townsend's dick again for a few minutes:

So he hit G5 18 years ago... Big fuckin' deal...

It's getting desperate for the Dave Apologists...

From the recent clips I've seen so far, the only way Dave could hit ANY note is to write the note on a wall and give him a bat...

To be fair, I think one of the reasons that DLR has such a low starting point, vocally, is because he smokes...Sadly, that same habit does eventually limit one's range by reducing the ability to reach the higher notes. As a consequence, I doubt you'll ever hear Dave hit that high again.

Perhaps I should also add that just because you have a four-octave range, it doesn't mean that you are singing the "right notes, in the right order"!

    5.50 onwards...

Is it confirmed that DLR still smokes?
I thought he gave that up years ago in hopes of salvaging his range.

As far as I'm aware he still partakes of the odd cig or two (or three) - certainly, he was still smoking on the last tour.

There was a link to a video posted shortly before ADKOT was released, and Dave was signing autographs while smoking a cigar. It was the one where he said the new album wasn't going to be released on vinyl, which proved to be untrue. Of course you don't typically fully inhale cigar smoke into your lungs (some guys do) but it is certainly capable of reaching the back of your throat. The guy certainly appears to be in excellent physical condition and I always wondered about people who were into fitness but also smoked cigs.

I am not sure about this but for some singers ala Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Joni Mitchell, smoking cigarettes has HELPED their voices. Though they sing in different genres. You gotta admit when Dave goes low he sounds cool as hell nowadays

Whilst it might make the timbre and tone more 'appealing' (to some), it does nothing to enhance vocal range.

On the 2 vids where Dave interviews Alex and Edward you can hear in Dave's laugh that he definitely still smokes. The part 1 vid is where I could tell.

Did you ever even hear these tunes that you claim "suck ass?" "Slam Dunk" is an excellent tune, and "Big Train" isn't bad either. The other two are covers -- "Let It All Hang Out" is enjoyable, imo.

It's frustrating to read uninformed b.s... Dave's vocal range increased sometime before the recording of "Your Filthy Little Mouth." (He wrote in "Crazy From The Heat" about when he discovered that he 'had the high note.') Personally, I like his screams and yelps in G4/G5.

In early Van Halen, Dave rarely used more than two octaves.

Again, it's frustrating to read b.s. from two sides of an argument: "David's a better singer because x," or "Sammy's a better singer because y," and then see it argued as though it's fact. It's opinion.

Dave can sing in 4 octaves - does it mean he's a better singer than Sammy Hagar, technically? No. Sammy Hagar has a lot of power behind his voice, and sings in a higher octave & key -- does it mean he's a better singer than David Lee Roth, technically? No.

BTW: Mark Slaughter can hit A5..? Does anyone know if he was castrated?
