now, i'm no fan of stuttering john.
i knew him when i worked at krock and was less then thrilled with him.

anyway, he does a radio show now after stern goes off the air and he basically stutters and tells bad jokes. luckily, i was listening today cause KROCK has been playing VH to death lately and John is a VH fan.

He breaks between songs and goes on about the VH/DLR reunion rumors and was asking for someone to confirm them. He then started in with saying he heard DLR is getting some serious vocal coaching because he lost so much of his signature sound.

This is an excellent sign if it's true because if Dave show's THAT much of a commitment to improving his vox, then that would be half the battle won in getting this reunion and tour to see the light of day. (or "light up the sky" as i would prefer)

IMHO, i am thrilled to hear about this because the absolute LAST thing i want is lip syncing at a VH show... Unfort. most backup vox and far too many lead vox are pre-recorded these days. I was a little suspicious of some of the sounds i heard on the III tour, but that's all water under the bridge.

Wow, you worked at KROC eh Van Edge? What do you do?

I am a huge Stern fan myself. I am skeptical that John knows any more than anyone else but keep us posted!

    Cheers.

    i worked in promotions there '95 - '96.
i have some wild pics of some adventures i had promoting stern's Miss America book when it came out. never got old howie in a pic, though, but got a lot of nice lookin' scores girls (which is much better :cool)

i was there when the station changed from classic rock to modern rock - saw a lot of people get fired and realized i did not want to spend the rest of my career in that environment. i'd go back to radio but only if i was able to do production.

I have worked in radio as a producer since the early nineties.

And yeah, I have seen some of the industrys brutal realities in terms of economics. My present employer is very ethical and treats their people well though.

If that's true, I think that's great, there's nothing wrong with Dave getting coaching on his chops. Might help him get back some of his old sound while perserving his voice for a tour and hopefully future recordings with VH.

I obviously know who Stuttering John is, but does he have any kind of reputation for being right about something like this?

Certainly nothing wrong with Dave getting some vocal coaching. A voice is a delicate thing, especially in the course of a long tour; any edge Dave can get through coaching would be the best thing for the band. Like VanEdge said, it would suck if VH relied on using taped vocals at their shows.

I would lose some respect for Dave if he used taped vocals...I would rather hear him sing a little "off" than lip sync. I just can't imagine that he would do that.

theodore - shoot me an email and we'll trade war stories...

yeah - as for the DLR vocal coaching, i think that is totally cool. i mean, remember how ed & al thought a tour w/ him in '96 would suck? maybe dave was less receptive to this sort of idea back then.

if these guys really humble themselves, this whole thing could be awesome and possibly go beyond one album and tour.

Ya know, I was thinking this could be the reason it's taking so long. I mean, lets face it, Dave's voice isn't like it used to be. I hope that he does do vocal lessons and I really hope he quits smoking. That's the key if we want to hear him sound good.

There were stories around before Dave's last tour about him working on his voice with a coach. If he's still at it, than things have to be getting pretty good. There was a noticeable difference in the quality of his voice from the early shows to the later ones.
