    This is crazy!

    Each day i seem to be hearing this differently.
    I'm using the 0.5 slow speed on Youtube, and now i hear the brushed attack on the
    B string notes again.
    I'm hearing it all picked, like he's doing in the live sequences.

    Yesterday, i heard hammer ons.

    All those years of reading GFTPM tabs have ingrained the hammer-on sequence into
    my brain!

    Now i'm hearing it all picked, three & three.

    Another question is why would he change the all picked pattern in the studio?
    Live, you always see/hear him picking every note within the sequence, save a few bum notes here & there.

    In that video I posted I'm pretty sure he's hammering on.

    Eddie has hands that are very suited to applying force too the guitar, and his middle finger pick grip allows very even and fast notes, due to the angle his hand lays on the bridge. He can use the much stronger forward and back motion of the wrist compared to the side to side motion that happens when you hold the pick between thumb and index. I've been practicing the outside picking and I am taking back the stuff I said about overcoming inertia with outside picking. With some slight changes in technique I can see how eddie could easily do outside picking. But there are some very specific angles the hand needs to move in order to pull it off. It would be hard to explain, I could make a video on it once I've perfected the technique.

    We've seen Ed pick 'em and also do the half & half thing with hammer ons and picking.Think of the solo to I'm the One, the ones from Source of Infection, or the cadenza from A.F.U.

    To me, it seems like he favors the smoothness of that pick/hammer/hammer and then pick/pick/pick on the next string. Lot's of examples of it in his playing. The climbing runs in the On Fire solo and some licks in Eruption also come to mind.

    Ed often changes it up live because, well, he can... No different than him slightly altering some of the ad libbed parts in his live solo showcase. My $0.02.

    I had mentioned earlier that our mind can play tricks on us.
    If you listen to that segment as a whole, regardless of speed, you may notice that the notes come in waves, and the accents are on the four notes in a row, that are picked (4,5,6,1).
    In a big picture, it sorta creates a stair climbing feel.
    Or maybe like stabbing forward, as in fencing.
    If it was all picked, I think it would sound more homogenous, and less dramatic.

    For decades my ear insisted "hammer-ons on the B", i had programmed myself to
    hear it exactly as it was written out.

    But through video & slow speed, i'm actually hearing what Garbeaj picked up on.
    I was so sure i was right, posted my thoughts, relistened, then wasn't sure again.

    Most folks here have only studied digital renditions of all this stuff.
    Digital reproductions have some advantages, and some drawbacks, that can make sounds that were never there, and lose other sounds that were there.
    It's all very subjective, and everyone's ears are different.
    Digital enhancements can be misleading.
    Personally, when I listen to most of these digitally slowed down, pitch corrected versions, I hear things I can only describe as digital smears. Usually, I'm not sure what I'm hearing!
    A few of us here, started studying this stuff, long ago, before the digital age, with turntables, at 16RPM, and old vinyl (non digitally remastered) pressings.
    And from that, some of us few have developed our own set of paradigms.

    In the meantime, I'll just let Edward be Edward

    After lots of research, i'm convinced Garbeaj was correct.
    I've gotta take my hat off to the guy, because it takes really good ears to hear that.

    I've watched videos of Eric Johnson, Yngwie, Joe Stump, even Zakk Wylde,
    and these guys are utilizing that technique as well.
    It's like Slant picking coupled with economy picking, which is almost the same deal.
    And the concept makes complete sense.

    I grew up hearing about strict alternate picking, yet economy picking actually makes
    more sense because you are cutting the motion & effort involved, in half.

    This guy has a really cool take on it as well, doing a reverse slant pick idea.

    I used to take him for granted on CVH, and with maturity, i've come to see the error of my ways.
    I liked his stuff on JB's video feed, and realized, "Hey, that's a real person behind the name, and
    i like him."

    But i never knew anything about slant picking, until he exposed & dissected it with video evidence.
    Now, i'm seeing it blow up on guitar related channels.

    Without a doubt that string skipping technique is a valid way to do three picked notes, though What I'm currently interested in is how he gets such a strong accent on the start of the b and the finish of the e. It's whats fooled us all this time. Sure you can force it, but the way eddie does it in spanish fly has such a snap to it, it's hard to control. Garb says it's a slight mute, I have a hard time proving it to myself as I don't have hands like eddie. We have very different hands.

    You’re more likely to find it under the name “That’s Why I Love You” - it was a track released with Gary on some early promo versions of VH3.

    Here’s a decent cover video that may help. Use this as a starting point.

    This is an old thread that came up, but I'll reply since you are still active. It's awesome to hear that someone else did the 16 RPM record player thing to slow down solos. I began doing that in 1978 on my parent's giant Zenith console stereo, to try and figure out various VH solos. Pretty much all I had available back then to slow things down. I used it for a few other solos as well, such as a few fast runs in DP SOTW. A very cliched song now, but back then my band played it and it wasn't quite burned out yet.
