Is ADKOT Dave's greatest work lyrically?

I have to say you can make an argument that collectively- this might be Dave's best work ever with the lyrics... It's a great mix of the whimsical and deliberate, touching on contemporary trivia, catching the spirit of everyday life for the blue collar guy & girl and just plain fun! Truly poetic and maybe his best quantifiable work ever in one package!

I have to say that I always thought Dave's lyrics were inspired from the music Ed wrote first- and maybe I'm wrong about this- but it would seem the word jazz clips suggest differently, at least in some cases. (keeping in mind of course that the music for over half the album is decades in the making) But clearly there are instances of Dave fitting pre-written lyrics into music that just makes an inspired connection...

In any case, words and music alike, still no sign of me getting "worn out" on this record yet and i am listening non stop!
"One thing about Ed..., ONE THING about Ed... (heh, heh...), when he has a guitar around his neck, he's not tryin' to bullshit
anybody." Sammy Hagar, in Charlotte, NC during the Sam & Dave tour, introing into Finish What Ya Started.

They definitely are not weak by any standard. They are par for the course in terms of Dave. Dave's lyrics have always been left of centre and personally those are the kind of lyrics I love the most. Steven Tyler was the same.

Lyrically, I just can't put any of the tunes from DKOT up with:

    Little Guitars
    On Fire
    Drop Dead Legs
    Unchained
    Hear About it Later
    So This is Love
    Push Comes to Shove
    Simple Rhyme
    Girl Gone Bad
    Top Jimmy

There are plenty more I could list. Personally, none of the tunes from the new album lyrically rank with those.

    Yes.

"When is the last time you did something for the first time?" is his best line ever, I believe.

As a whole, I would say lyrically this album is in the top three best Dave & Van Halen albums. Dave has written some great lyrics with VH, so it's hard for me to just hand the top crown to just one album. But it definitely reaffirms his ability to put great lyrics together. He certainly hasn't lost it over the years.

Couldn't tell ya. I'm having a bitch of a time learning the words even though I've been through the album about 50 times top to bottom. Must be my old age ADD kicking in.

I do know I walk around with "when is the last time you did something for the first time?!" constantly in my head for some reason. Great line.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

You should be whipped with a dead fish for NOT mentioning "Secrets" One of his finest efforts and my personal favourite.

And it gets a bit of a bad rap by some linkers but CGTSNM is also worthy of a mention.

Keep that in mind, when we say our goodbyes

I must say, not having the lyrics, I don't understand half of what Dave is saying. That's not good.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

"Bumper sticker on a rockets ass. Go home the earth is full" - classic Dave

"Woman. You suffer from a color" "I suffer for you" "Now everybody suffers" - Another goodie!

I will say, I am sick of all the "1-800..." references on these songs. Reusing this is just lazy. It was cool in "Just Like Paradise", but he uses it twice on ADKOT and it's just so played out already.

I respectfully disagree. This is one of his finest bodies of work and inbetween such great lines like you just quoted, and innuerable other ones throughout the album, two or three references to 1-800 numbers just should not be viewed as lazy. I feel the same about rhyming "breakdown" with "breakdown" in YAYB. Its not lazy at all. It fits. It doesn't slam the breaks on a great song. The lyrics chug along overtop of some great playing, and all is right in the world.

    Stay Frosty!

I personally feel it is the most interesting lyrics ever on a Van Halen record. Could have left off one of the 1-800 ones, but really, it's no big deal. I felt that too much of the Sammy era songs had lyrics that weren't very good. My 2 favorite VH songs are actually Sammy era (including Humans Being, my favorite song of all time), but those 2 are the only ones I loved, and the lyrics and melodies were the reason why. ADKOT is definitely much more to what I want out of song lyrics and vocal phrasings!

If you use headphones you can sort out the Rothisims and theres lots and I keep finding more. Stellar lyrics on this cd.
