Even though I hate all the Vanhagar records, it's good to see Mick did a great job producing their record.

My friend was the sound guy for the Def Leppard Hysteria and Bon Jov New Jersey Tour and was an engineer for Foreigner one year. Told me lots of stories about Foreigner having fist fights in the studio.

Interesting how Jones said he worked a lot with Hagar, that Eddie pretty much "knew what he wanted" already, i.e. didn't take much input.

Gsus, I hate it when an interviewer is talking more than the person that he's interviewing.

    neat, but revisionist.
mick jones has flip-flopped on his level of contribution to the record, though that could be a reflection on who he is working with at the time.
taking this interview at face value, he basically let ed do whatever he wanted, but had influence on sammy as they were both the newbies with roth and templemen gone.
that would explain how in some interviews he "had a large role" and in others he "basically came in now and then to check-up and then left".

i DO believe he helped a lot, at the very least technically.

btw- billy joel "storm front" is a very good record.

You can see a big difference in Hagar's singing from VOA to 5150. Mick said he pushed Sammy and I believe him. The music Eddie wrote had to lift motivate him mostly. I think that album changed Sammy and he only got better from there.

Not having a producer on OU812 was a big mistake.

i remember a radio interview sam did for "i never said goodbye" and he acknowledged that 5150 did elevate his range and his comfort zone.

agreed, i love 0u812- but it's always good to have a neutral perspective to challenge and draw things out.

When I was younger I liked ou812 better than 5150 but now that im older 5150 is by far the superior album. I know some of you might disagree with this but I feel 5150 is the third best van halen album period. I kjnda feel like its the holy trinity of van halen albums, nothing they ever do will be better than those three. Van halen, 1984, and 5150. I know some like fair warning or 2 but from beginning to end those really are the three best. I look at it this way, if someone had never heard of van halen these are the three albums I would recomend they listen to first. Besides a greatest hits of course.

I honestly probably have better memories of Ou812 than any VH album period. Was such a massive fan back then, and I thought it was a sensational album. Still really like a lot of those songs. The problem for me with all the Sam era stuff is I wore it all out after hundreds and hundreds of listens because that's when I was at the peak of my rabid fandom. Add to that the bootleg factor - and I just listened to the songs too many times.

For me 5150 is more of a classic van halen sounding album, while ou812 is kinda the ttransition album between the classic sound and the not enough and cant stop loving you sound. I still love it, its a great album. The second best hagar album but 5150 is superior imo.
