Default How important to you is it how ADKOT was made?

Although, in general, the response to the album is overwhelmingly positive, I am curious about how the record was made is important to you.

The Beatles first album Please Please Me was recorded essentially live with virtually zero edits with the entire band playing all at one time. They did it less than 10 hours. That album stands alone as a classic all by itself because of that. At the time, The Beatles were a performance group, not recording artists, so the album captured them at the peak of their performance prowess.

Nevertheless, just five years later, they had abandoned performance to solely spend their time in the studio and came up with Sgt. Pepper, generally regarded as the single greatest recording of all time. It was anything but "live" and it took more than six months to complete (a lifetime in 1967).

Van Halen in 1977 is not Van Halen in 2012. I can only imagine how many takes and edits there are on there to make it absolutely perfect. They've reused old tracks, and even flown in some of Dave's "Runnin' with the Devil" howls, the count off isn't real, etc. These days, the computer is king -- and from what I've heard there is not a misplaced note, beat, or vocal on the entire thing. My bet is that it is extremely edited.

IMHO -- I DO NOT CARE. I don't care if this album was pieced together by NASA scientists. Whatever they did to create this product that will live forever is 100% fine by me.

There are three things you don't want to see how they are made: laws, sausages, and Van Halen albums.

    LOL!!!

I would LOVE to see a documentary on how "A Different Kind of Truth" was made.

Somehow I bet that Wolfgang has more to do it with it than I'd been thinking... Remember the tunes he picked for the setlist in '07-'08..?

I wouldn't be surprised if he was a catalyst for raiding the vaults. (Additionally, I bet David Lee Roth was overjoyed at raiding the vaults.)

To answer the original question: it's not important to me. I realize that this band has a combustible nature, and I'm just glad that they were able to make music -- however it happened.

Well, listen to the beginning of Blood and Fire. Dave and Ed's guitar are out of tune during the line Winner, Saint, Sinner.

And on another song (can't remember which one) it's just as if I can hear an edited part. The snare comes in at a weird time. Maybe it's just Al and if so then it's more than cool!

I'm always interested in recording processes, behind the scene's stuff and what not. So, this is no exception.

I think a lot of the album sounds quite spontaneous and live, some of it doesn't and there you can hear the layers and overdubs. One day I think the production and the mix are both great and clear, the next day I find listening to the mix very tire-ring and maybe even brickwalled.

Anyways, it's a great album because the songs and the performances are superb! And yeah, I would love to know more about the whole recording process. Why not?

I would love to know how the album was made, at least from a technical point of view. I recall reading/hearing a statement from the spokesperson for EVH Gear at NAMM 2011 saying Eddie was using the Wolfgang Stealth, a prototype Wolfgang Custom and two Wolfgang Specials for recording the album. If that statement was accurate, I'd love to know which guitars were used for which songs.

But overall, I don't care if they 'cheated' their way into making this album or not. It's a brilliant album and I'm just glad to have it.
I don't always listen to Van Halen, but when I do, I prefer David Lee Roth. 'Stay Frosty' my friends. - The Most Interesting Man In The World

I don't care how much of an expert you claim to be....there is no proof they pasted in Dave's vocals from other songs and as an "expert" you would know they didn't reuse old tracks. They re-worked them and re-recorded them from scratch.

Don't sound so misinformed when you claim to be so well informed.

The important thing is the end result not how they got there...

I wish they would've spent less time in the studio, mixing, editing, etc...

The album sounds a bit overproduced to me...

I said it earlier, I prefer the mystery of not knowing how it was made, but if they do something I'll watch it.

I always loved Aerosmith The Making of Pump. What I hate, are bands who haven't made it big yet and try to do self-produced videos of the making of their album. It's only cool to see a documentary on your band after you've made it big. It's not cool to see it before, like you're somehow already stars.

Agree. That's why the original post rubbed me the wrong way. This will not end well once the natives see the smoke.

I think it's that the notes don't harmonize as easily as they should. It does sound odd there I agree.

Dave sings a C over Ed playing C#...not that I'm an expert.
