Default A Different Kind of Truth: Billboard charts & U.S. sales / "comeback" comparisons

With first week sales of 188,000 (U.S.) in the midst of the music industry's "piracy era," Interscope must be very pleased that their reported "high risk/high reward" gamble on Van Halen has, thus far, paid off.

For comparison, here are some first week sales figures and Billboard chart positions for other major rock comeback albums in the piracy era, (i.e. the past 7 years is when the bottom fell out, essentially):

    1. Van Halen, "A Different Kind of Truth:" 188,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1998 - 2012 (14 years)

    2. Blink-182, "Neighborhoods:" 151,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 2003 - 2011 (8 years)

    3. The Rolling Stones, "A Bigger Bang:" 129,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #3
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1997 - 2005 (8 years)

    4. Creed, "Full Circle:" 110,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 2001 - 2009 (8 years)

    5. The Who, "Endless Wire:" 81,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #7
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1982 - 2006 (24 years)

    6. Stone Temple Pilots, "self-titled:" 62,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 2001 - 2010 (9 years)

    7. The Cars, "Move Like This:" 36,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #7
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1987 - 2011 (24 years)

Interesting. I'm surprised STP's numbers weren't higher. Fantastic band, fantastic single, album, even the video and marketing was about as good as you could reasonably get. VH sold three times or more the first week? wow.

My take is that VH sold more because of the DLR factor. It's not so much the time between records, as it is the time between DLR records and the fanatacism that accompanies the whole DLR/Hagar eras.

    Slim to none...

I would put the over/under for next week's sales at 32K...

Most of the people that were going to buy the album did already.

Adele's first album will probably outsell VH next week.

I agree 100% with the STP comment -- that was very good album, imo, and very well-promoted.

As to Van Halen's sales and Billboard position for the upcoming week: I'm no psychic, but speculating..? if the band is in NYC to do media, which makes sense to me (I mean, why else would they go?) VH could sell a lot of albums with a good performance.

ADKoT got great reviews, and is getting such positive word-of-mouth that it will likely stay in the top half of the charts next week, whether the band does media or not.

Then..! The tour starts!! As dates for mega-cities like NYC, Boston, Philly, and Chicago approach, VH will likely see multiple rises in ADKoT's sales.

Getting the band to open up a little more for interviews and nabbing a few cover stories for rags like Rolling Stone is really going to be a must for the album to keep the "buzz" going. I also think they need to quickly release another single with a better music video here soon too. The word of mouth and buzz was very strong last week. Unfortunately Adele's Grammy hype and the unfortunate passing of Whitney Houston will take up all the headlines in the music world over the coming week or two. Van Halen's comback ablum will take a backseat.

It would be wise of the band's management to let those two huge music stories run it's course over the next 10 days and then try another big push of the album with the media as the tour starts. And yes it's probably going to mean Eddie Van Halen will HAVE to do some interviews to help it. The band may not like it, but in this day and age if they want the album to be a bigger success they will have to do more to promote it to the various media outlets.

    3. The Rolling Stones, "A Bigger Bang:" 129,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #3
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1997 - 2005 (8 years)

I remember when that album came out I was suprised at how weak it did on the charts. At the time I thought it was a pretty strong album. It's wasn't as strong of an album as Voodoo Lounge was but much stronger than their previous effort Bridges to Babylon and it got great reviews from the critics. It had to have been a pretty big letdown for the Stones although they know their real money was with the tour.

This was one of the sure signs that classic rock was on life support. It is actually more amazing that they outsold the stones. The stones did more publicity abd had the huge touring machine behind them. The Stones gave up on the album and were only performing 12 cuts per night from a strong album. I expect at least 4 of these cuts on ADKOT to make the show. Hell, I'd be happier if they played the whole thing.

A Bigger Bang was pretty darn good. it had a nice strippped back feel and raw edge to it. Rough Justice, Oh No Not you Again, Back of My Hand, Let Me Down Slow, Laugh I Nearly Died and the groovey Infamy were all pretty inspired and a lot of fun. ZZ Top's Mescalero has some of the bands coolest songs on it (Alley Gator, Liqour, Stackin Paper, Dusted, Tramp, Going So Good, etc), but I've never even heard one of these tunes on the radio! This is what you hear: ZZ TOp is back.... then the opening riff to Tush!? Or the Stones have a new album out... then they fookin play Satisfaction for the 8 mill. time!? Even during the Van Halen weekend they were having around here last week, they were playing two from VH every hour and they were playing Hagar stuff? I was like play one old vh/DLR tune and off the new album you bastardes. It's not that I care how much an album makes for the money, it's I want cool music too be heard.

Sadly radio pretty much refuses to REALLY push new songs by classic rock bands over the past 15 years or so. It's sad because these older bands can still deliever kick ass songs. I guess radio wants to play it safe and continue to play the old hits instead of getting behind new material....it's very lame!! I think this is why the older bands hardly release new music anymore because they know radio won't get behind it and drive up the sales. The only "established" bands that can get promotion on new songs is like U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers because they can get the crossover plays on alternative format stations that do pump up new tunes. I'll be curious to see if the new Aerosmith album is pushed by rock radio. They were really the last of the classic rock bands from the 70's that their new songs got a push on the radio. Even AC/DC really didn't get a whole lot of radio support from "Black Ice". Runaway Train got some big play at first but that was about it.

It's really sad man. Money Made is one of AC/DC coolest songs in the 20 years and should have been an FM staple. Aerosmith may fair off better, but who knows.

I would love to hear a classic rock station play a contemperary set of songs that consisted of

    Big River - VH
    Rough Justice - Stones
    Money Made - ACDC
    Liqour - ZZ Top
I'll Bit Your Face Off - Cooper
    Face The Promis - Seger
Rock'n Roll Jesus - Kid Rock
    Beyond Beautiful - Aerosmith

You forgot about chinese democracy. It sold 261,000 but debut at #3 because it was released at a much more difficult time of the year. (during the thanksgiving rush). Say what you will about that record, I think it is a master piece.
