Default Guitar on 1984 and 5150

Ok guys, I have another dumb question. I had heard someone say that the 1984 and 5150 albums were recorded with the Franky, I always thought they were recorded with the Kramer. I just assumed because he used it for the tours that he was using it in the studio. Anyone know anything about this, I really couldn't find much info? Follow up, if he did use the the Franky on 5150, how does the guitar tone sound so much different than on past albums?

Yes he used the frank on 1984 but didn't get the kramer till the tour.
He used the kramer on 5150 through different effects.
He also used an old strat on "best of both worlds" and a steinberger with active pickups on "summer nights" and "get up".

Yeah the Steinberger has a tremolo to change the tuning on the fly evenly. Ed goes from 3rd-fret-capo to E standard and then I think D standard for the solo.

I actually really love the tone of his kramer. sounds real warm/brown with a nice clarity still like here,

that tone still gives me chills!

    yup.... roger that...
he also used the 1984 Kramer for "Good Enough" with an A bass string instead of the low E for a heavier thump.

Yup, he had a GL2T (H,H pickups), I have a GL4T (H,S,S) .. It uses double ball strings and you have a lot of adjustments

My page with the setup instructions I got from another Steinberger owner years ago LINK

Mine was painted like his OU812 Steinberger

    Misplaced my battery door

Eddie actually had another Steinberger, the OU812 guitar that was I believe a GL4S (not a transtrem, either that or he removed the arm)

And of course Eddie's 5150 Steinberger as seen in LWAN

He actually used a variety of guitars for each album. Hot For Teacher was an old Gibson Korina Flying V, Top Jimmy was a Ripley Stereo Guitar. As stated, he used a Steinberger on a few tracks on 5150, and I believe he used a few other guitars for other songs (I vaguely remember something about a Fender Strat for Best Of Both Worlds?).

I always wondered why on "Finish What Ya Started" the video, Ed used a Teisco Del Ray guitar, it's said he used a Strat straight into the console for that tune.

I do know a Teisco Del Ray was supposed to be his very first guitar (electric I assume)

Anyone remember what the back guitar is?

To me, the guitar on -let's say- Panama and HFT sounds completely different than past albums. Never liked it. Sounds almost as if he mixed in a direct signal or something. The distortion sounds all spongy and thin.

If you look back on the first 4 albums, despite using different guitars (i.e. Franky, Destroyer) it was somewhat of a consistent sound to me. DD strayed slightly from that sound, but 1984 was a complete overhaul in my opinion.

Even as a 17 year old I noticed it sounding different back then and simply didn't like it. Of course, my fandom allowed me to overlook that fact at the time, but to me, that was the album where the "brown sound" was lost forever.

And I know some look to 1984 as his best tone ever. Go figure.
