I threw 5150 on the playlist today, and noticed, for the first time, how
different sounding the Bass lines are in, Love Walks in.
I wonder if Ed laid those down, only because the phrasing is a bit more busy.

I also noticed the guitar solo, especially the final ascending run, has the Diver
    Down tone!
It's got that Full Bug sound, but just placed in a lush ballad.

So there's still some "brown" post '84.

I know you're not high, but wtf man.

Ain't no fuckin' Full Bug Diver Down brown sound in LWI.

There weren't no brown in '84 either.

Brown is the sole property of WACF, FW, 1, and DD, to a lesser extent II.

You want brown, you spin WACF or FW.

    That's epitome brown, alpha omega.

And Mike played the bass on 5150. Funny how some still think anytime the bass sounds groovy, it probably was Ed. To be fair, that was simple lack of exposure for the on the fly fan that only knew Mike from the albums and his bass solo. Once he was out out, in '05, that was when he first truly showed his true chops to mass audiences on the Other Half tour. What a kick that was.

Also, Skyscraper is good for tea parties and ballet practice, but little else.

Sorry, couldn't resist. JLP is one of the worst songs known to man.

But ya know, when Dave embraced the blues in his varied solo albums...that was where he shined brightest outside of VH.

I'll have to listen back to LWI, but it wouldn't surprise me if Ed laid out the bass tracks for any keyboard driven tune since keys are also covering that lower register.

I'm 99% certain it's Ed on bass for Right Now. The tone, phrasing, etc. sounds just like Ed's playing on the III album.

Mike was all over the bass on the early tours, especially 1979.

The solo he takes during the extended jam in YRGM in Tuscon 1979 is the trippiest, coolest playing I've ever heard him do. The whole jam the band does might just be their best ever.

You don't hear that, Squalen? The solo has some Diver Down too it. Especially, starting at 2:54.

All the 6 pack is brown just different versions of it.

To me, brown is the perfect juxtaposition between Edís tone, Alís snare, and Tedís tweaks. Only 3.5 VH albums truly captured that perfection, I wager. VH1, WACF, FW, and 1/2 of Diver. Itís truly a flashpoint rhythm of simultaneous craft between artists feeding each other as well as how the sum of those parts is being supervised and threaded through the soundboard. Itís a wonder they managed to capture that bottle lightning once, much less 2 more times. I think a huge part of thatís on Ted. You canít have the true VH brown sound without Alís proper kit tone, and that obviously wasnít present with 5150ís e-skins.

Your Ďdifferent versionsí are probably my lack of versions. But I may be somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to the VH brown sound.

VH II has some of it, to be sure. But the production was raw. The depth ratio between the snare and the axe wasnít quite what it was on the debut, and it was too dry, the reverb mix was more for the room and less for a hall. Lots of folks clearly like it that way, which is fine, but I donít see it exemplifying the core VH brown sound.

When it comes down to brass tacks, even WACF suffers a bit in that drier, rawer regard. Ultimately the work that probably shows the power trioís warmest brown sound are VH1 and Fair Warning, and perhaps even the 4 OGs on DD.

It does certainly appear that Ed started exercising more restraint on the live deep end after the Invasion tour.

The solo I was talking about was actually a bass solo by Mike during the YRGM breakdown. I know you dont like live boots, but you should check it out. The whole Tuscon show, actually. But that YRGM is probably the single best version the band ever did.

I will be told I don't know shit but oh well. Chances are the reason why the bass line appears to be different is because Eddie did in fact come up with it as he created Love Walks In. This song like any other keyboard song was written by Eddie. The only song they had to hammer out in the studio was Feels So Good because Eddie was in fact writing that in the studio. Anyway since he wrote it on keys, like 99.99% of any song written by a keyboardist he likely came up with the bass line with his left hand. Its not a slam on Mike nor is it stating that the bass line he came up with is the best thing since sliced bread. Just something that is very common when one writes a song. I seriously doubt Eddie went "here is the right hand part. Mike, why don't you come up with a bass line?" Most likely he simply listened to a demo and copied it. Well Eddie probably thinks he showed him on video tape what to play.

I love Dave's cover of Night Life...one of the few highlights of that album.

Would have loved DLR and Terry Kilgore do an entire blues album, but I am sure I am one of the few that would have bought it.

Skyscraper is great. Its just a shame it sounds like it was mixed in 1988...

2 Fools is an incredibly underrated song. Some of Vai's best on that one. The opening riff is killer. Vai's on fire on the entire album.
