Never could stomach Eagles Fly. They could add that but not change up the CVH tunes....stupid.
By '91 I was upset. After '95 I was done. You had the new tunes but all the others were the same ones every tour. Love 'em to death, but ya gotta give us something different, sometimes.

Was glad Wolf, or whoever, decided to change it up for these recent tours.

There's not a single Sam solo tune I wanted to hear at a VH gig over VH tunes. Just stupid. Dont care if Sam was an established solo artist, too much better material from every VH album to choose from, but Sam's ego needed to be stroked.

The setlists for the last 3 tours were mostly great.

Agree with the last three set lists.

Last thought on the Sam songs. I certainly didn’t go hoping or necessarily wanting them to play any Sam solo but I expected and understood it. It was Alex and Eddie showing their respect for Sam’s established career as well as recognizing Sam fans were buying tickets who who were not necessarily VH fans until then. It also gave a good vibe about how those guys felt about each other at the time. My first comment walking out of my first Sam era show in 86 was “Not as good as with Dave but they sure looked like they enjoyed what they were doing more.”

What I didn’t expect and was really disappointed by was the near ignoring of the VH catalog that pre-existed Sam.

The first tour, sure. After that, really didnt need to play that stuff, Sam solo I mean. Ignoring the six pack always sucked, but out of the six CVH tunes they did do with Sam over the years, the only ones he ever really gave an honest effort were Panama and YRGM. The rest either just didnt fit his vibe or style as a singer(RWTD, Unchained), or he seemed to treat them as an afterthought or a chore that he begrudgingly had to do(ATBL, Jump).

Pretty much. And he dug his own grave doing this. If he bit the bullet and sang more old songs, Dave's return would've been less of an event. Coz when Dave returned, it was also a big part of the back catalog that was "returning" with him.

He definitely didn’t sing the rare classic VH tune with any passion. Always felt like he would have chosen to never sing a Dave song if it was up to him.

Looking back on what we know now...they should have just changed the name. For every fan that say's people may have been more accepting of Sam if he had mixed up the classic songs, or did them justice,lol...there are just as many fans that were never going to accept anyone but Dave. I saw and heard that first hand. Long before internet fan sites.

All we would be arguing about now is, which band was better, not what version of VH was better. Although the arguments would still be the same, the peas wouldn't have to touch the mashed potatoes for some folks.

Ultimate Classic rock recently tallied the top 25 most played VH songs in concert. 3 Hagar solo songs made the list:

Counting down the songs Van Halen has played the most in concert offers an interesting perspective on the band's two distinct main eras.

Songs from the band's early years with original singer David Lee Roth dominate the ranking. But Sammy Hagar earns more spots than you might expect, sometimes even with songs that come from his solo career. Even Gary Cherone's brief time in the band affected how high certain songs wind up on the chart.

Seventeen of the 25 songs Van Halen have performed most frequently are taken from the six albums they recorded with Roth between 1978 and 1984, including 14 originals and three covers. Another five come from the four records they released with Hagar over the next 10 years; three more were drawn from Hagar's solo career.

Unsurprisingly, nothing from 1998's Van Halen III, the band's only album with third singer Cherone, made the list. But the 86 shows he played with the band add an extra and occasionally unexpected boost to the totals for several Roth- and Hagar-era songs. Set lists from the Hagar years had even more impact on the fate of several Roth songs. You'd expect Van Halen's lone No. 1 single "Jump" to be the most played song from the band's 1984 album, but Hagar's early and continued support of "Panama" flips that race on its head.

The song counts are courtesy of Setlist.fm and represent Van Halen's live appearances through their 2015 North American tour. Guitar, bass and drum solos are not included in the ranking unless they boast an actual song title.

No, there really weren't that many fans ready to write off Van Halen without Dave. Maybe in your redneck of the woods, but not in Van Halen's hometown, and I expect, most of the world. Fans were suspect of the replacement idea, but quickly grew to embrace it once they'd played live. The album didn't really matter much, though it too was received fairly well, considering everyone was ready to write it off, including me. Eddie was still shredding and Sammy fit. VH shows were still a blast. The 5150 tour is proof positive of that.

Changing the name was never gonna happen. It's not Dave's band, nor was it gonna be Sammy's band, it was Ed's band. Obviously. Eddie is the star of Van Halen. Not Sam. Not Dave. Everybody knows that, even the casual fans. 95 percent of Van Halen fans don't go to VH shows to see Dave or Sammy. They go to see Eddie. They really don't care who's singing, as long as it's one of them lol.

    Simply not true.

Arguably, in his prime, Roth WAS the star of VH.

EVH was the mad scientist & my favorite, but Roth was the guy everyone recognized in the videos,
the mouth piece, the chick draw, and also, the focal point onstage.

Ed was the boy wonder, no doubt, but there was no other frontman like Dave.

I remember this girl from school went to see VH on the '84 tour, she was a huge fan,
and first thing i asked was: Did Eddie do his guitar showpiece?

She was like: Yeah, it was kinda too long, but Dave looked amazing!

Nah, Dave was the sideshow. People were there to rock. Ed, Al, and Mike always carried the show. With Dave or Sam. VH at its heart is a power trio.

Yeah, to say all anyone cared about was Ed in the old days is simply revisionist history. There is no denying how high Dave's star was in the 83-85 time frame.
