    Default Album cover design

Just interesting bit of trivia. A Different Kind of Truth cover was designed by SMOG design, who principal Jeri Heiden, designed or art directed covers for 5150 (credited as Jeri MacManus), OU812, FUCK, Balance and BOBW. Guess, Alex obviously digs her work because he keeps going back to her to design Van Halen covers.

yeah, but I hate that this one is a blatant rip off of a Commodores album cover ... it's not very original and doesn't seem to have anything to do with the album title at all.

I'm still waiting for Dave's explanation of this. There must be some rationale behind it. NO?

I think the cover is cool and I'm sure there's some inspiration for it. I also like the slipcase version I saw, which is essentially VH II in red.

Speaking of - how do you get the slipcase version.

    Very cool!

I had no idea this person had done so many designs for VH! They didn't do VH3 though?

Interestingly enough, I believe Alex's wife designed that one. Perhaps somebody can corroborate that for me.

You get someone in the EU to buy it and send it to you. Or, can obtain a mail forwarding address/service and do it that way, but it'd cost more.

I guess nobody in VH new about the Commodores album cover, the people from Smog just brought the idea and they liked it.

    That's what I think happened.
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

Sitting around listening to ADKOT, time for the nerd within me to break out and chime in on this. Many of my VH friends and I are rail "enthusiasts" as well. Some people like fishing and hunting, but I grew up next to the railroad, so it is always something I have been interested in on the side. Needless to say, if the fact that a new VH with Dave was being released wasn't awesome enough, the fact that they used a train on the cover was even cooler for me. Coincidentally, the railroad (New York Central System) featured on the ADKOT album cover ran through my hometown at one time. This will be the case for many of you along Lake Erie between Chicago and New York City as well.

Dave has had the train thing come up several times during his solo career. He mentions Raymond Lowey in this interview at about 3:25 interview (I'm assuming this is in the YFLM days because he has short hair?)

Lowey was responsible for the steam lining effort for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1930's and 1940's. The Pennsylvania Railroad's S1 locomotive Dave speaks of looked like this:

(Personally, I think this would have looked better on the cover, but it is the music inside that really matters!)

Oddly enough, VH went with the Pennsylvania Railroad's rival for the album cover and used a New York Central System Railroad 4-6-2 Hudson type locomotive (steamlined by Henry Dreyfuss) for the ADKOT cover. These locomotives were used on the NYC's star passenger train, The 20th Century Limited, and were known for their power AT speed (kind of like VH?) and certainly demanded the attention of anyone along the tracks with their unique styling. If anyone is interested in other info you can find it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NYC_Hudson

    Commodore's angle...

    VH's angle..

Although fierce rivals, the NYC and Pennsylvania merged in the late 1960's to form Penn Central. This later became part of Conrail, which itself was split as a company in 1999. Much of the former New York Central was turned over to CSX Transportation and the Pennsylvania Railroad section was turned over to to Norfolk Southern. (You may see both their commercials on TV. I'm not sure if anyone cares, but I figure some might be interested...

Sure, the reason is because listening to this album in like being run over by a huge 1940's steam engine! Bullethead - indeed!

It's not. The train is going the opposite direction. "You're facing the wrong lane!"

Some people will find anything to bitch about here. The album cover, roth vocals being sampled from years past, wolf not playing bass, on and on and on.

    A bunch of fucking whiners.
