    Default Al's kick mic

Anybody know why Alex's kick drum was mic'd with a SM58 at the 2/1/12 show?

I don't know how to attach to this:

    If you go to:

    www.vhnd.com

you will see pictures from the gig I'm referring to on the homepage.

I didn't see a hole in his front head on the kick.
Don't know if that had anything to do with it.

It was just a dummy mic. They were actually piping in a recording of Mike Anthony playing a kick drum by hand...

I've seen a lot of sound guys do it in small venues. The very low end (sub 100Hz) falls off quite a bit but it has a lot of punch to cut through the mix.

Its not unheard of to use a 58...

not the best choice by far but it works...doesnt capture the low freq. as well since its mainly a vocal mic.

The only thing I can think of is that the bass mic they planned to use wasn't working. Yeah I know pros tend to have a backup but even at the pro level you may not have an extra at showtime.

My vote for most comical post of the year. Too funny!

hahahahaha. Noticed that too. Probably has an internal bass drum mic, and the 58 is adding some attack?

That mic is to just pick up the response off of the front head. There is more than likely a much better dynamic mic made for bass drums inside the drum itself. Most professional drummers and engineers use this method of recording the kick to also get the "attack" of the pedal on the head along with the boom of the kick from inside and that mic at the front is for the response. Some will place a fourth mic pointing right where the mallet hits the head from the bass pedal. Heck, they use four mics on Peart's kick drum: the internal kick-drum mic, a woofer speaker with the polarity reversed to turn it into a microphone (Yamaha actually sells a ready-made mic like this called a Sub-Kick) against the front head for the really low frequencies, a small mic catching the response of the head for the high frequencies, and another on the mallet side to catch the “slap”. Depends on the engineer, really. But with Alex, I would guess there's more going on than just a SM58 for his bass drum. Especially since there is no hole so it's not even pointing inside of the drum.

Hey guys, I don't usually post outside of the Guitar Room, but with all things VH going on, I wanna join the larger VH Links community more.

I wouldn't be surprised at all that they used a 58 on the kick drum, especially if it was paired with some other 2nd mic. For whatever reason, I've always found that a 58 does better on kick than a 57. In fact, I used a PG58 as a kick beater mic paired with a Beta 52 on the front head to record drums for my band's upcoming album.
