    Vh brain trust:

Sorry if this has been covered, but which of these demos, based on the 90 sec clups, do we think are completely new?

Six of the tracks are from the '76-'78 era and one of the tracks is from an '84 era idea. We don't know if any of the other tracks were written pre-2010. For all we know, some of these other songs may have been recorded back in 2000 when Dave was working with Eddie or they may have been leftovers from Hagar or Cherone era songs. The fact remains that these are all "new" tracks. They've never been released before. I think this has been listed elsewhere, but what we know so far:

    1) Tattoo - "Down in Flames" from the first world tour '78.
    2) She’s The Woman - "She's the Woman" '76
    3) You and Your Blues - New
    4) China Town - New (some believe it's a Cherone second album leftover)
    5) Blood and Fire - "Ripley" from 1984
    6) Bullethead - "Bullethead" from '77
    7) As Is - New
    8) Honeybabysweetiedoll - New
    9) The Trouble With Never - New
    10) Outta Space - "Let's Get Rockin'" '76
    11) Stay Frosty - New
    12) Big River - "Big Trouble" '76
    13) Beats Workin’ - "Put Out the Lights" '76

It's really impossible to say. Even stuff that seems new because none of us have ever heard it could just be old material that never leaked. For all we know Stay Frosty was written 30 years ago.

It seems that about half the album is based on older material.

Yes, I meant samples, not Demos.

One of my two favorites is You and Your Blues, so that's really impressive to me that it's one of the new ones. Outta Space is another favorite of mine. Listened to the demo and I think the new one is better.

Prefer the original She's the Woman.

As-is and Babydoll I like a lot from what I've heard.

Trouble with Never...I'll just say I'm not surprised that it's a new one.

Thanks for putting that list together - would be cool to add that to the sticky at the top.

-Seven of the songs have almost the same music as 7 unreleased songs.
-All of these songs on the album have brand new lyrics.

    The end.

why? the stuff is really good so who cares. the truth is though, like it or not, the reality is there are 7 old songs re done, and 6 that are either new or we don't know? can't change that.

I posted this in the iTunes thread, but it applies more here...

I know a lot of the talk in reviews have been about recycling old demos, which I don't see why that's a big problem. You use the best material you have. For the most part everything sounds really good.

It does raise a question that maybe Eddie has some writers block and those rumored 10 albums worth of music might have been a bit over hyped.

While there are still some unreleased tracks out there, the only concern that I have about that process is if they ever decide to record a follow up album in a year or so. That's when we would really know if the well has dried up or not.

If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

I agree. They are all VH songs even if they were written in 1978. Even the new songs are really awesome. This well has not dried up and they prove it. C'mon VH had cover songs on many albums with Dave. No covers here. If they had two cover songs like other albums, people would be saying they can't write originals...never can win.

Old, new, it's all kick ass for me!
