Default ADKOT Best Drums on a VH Album?

ADKOT has to be :: top to bottom :: the most aggressive performance he's ever cranked out. I tend to take his playing for granted -- I just expect the drums to be solid . . . this beyond just "solid".

I'm not calling it without hearing all tracks in their entirety, but Alex is playing like a goddamn monster!!!

Yeah great drumming as always. Alex: Underrated, tasty, in the pocket...thunderous when he needs to be. He's a great server of the song.

I agree from what we've heard so far. It really seems like he went all out. He's always solid but both he and Ed seem to have been experimenting a lot. He's using a lot more double bass without just doing straight 16ths or the shuffle double bass groove he usually goes with. His dynamics really seem stellar.

Alex is a beast. Always had VH2 and 1984 as his "Magnus Opus"

From the clips this has potential to challenge this view. Because the bass is high in the mix the rhythms section is like a sledgehammer from the gods.

I've been listening obsessively :: as I can only imagine everyone else on here has been doing :: knowing Al's playing would lay a sound foundation beneath the three big question marks.

(I'm beyond blown away by what they've put out, BTW)

This evening I popped in the headphones while getting some work prepped for tomorrow morning. And, for the first time, I was just listening passively to the new material. The Trouble With Never hit the playlist and the drums commanded my attention . . . so I did a quick perusal of the rest of the tracks -- consciously listening to what Al has gifted us with.

    Powerful effort!

I've never heard Al sound better. Of course he has always been good, but he's just flat out throwin' down the gauntlet on this record. And thankfully I haven't heard any of those BS electric toms that he was using for so long either. Just pure percussion, like the first 4 or 5 records. I'm a big fan of his sound on WACF, but first impressions of this record tell me that Al's actually upped his game (which is just crazy at this stage) and never sounded better.

As always, he's steady. I think the biggest improvement is that he is louder on this album. Usually he's way in the background but on this album, it appears they have moved him up in the mix. In fact the same can be said for Wolfie as well. I've never heard the bass and drums so loud on a VH album, and I like it.

I just hope than when the album is out and we are listening to it in full quality, they didn't make the mix too loud. A lot of rock albums out now are just too loud and it makes everything muddy (see Metallica- Death Magnetic). As opposed to most VH albums that you have to really crank up the sound, this one appears out there and loud.

First thought I had after hearing the preview clips, was this is Al's best performance ever. He is a monster on this album. I give this album not only best playing, but best sound put down on record as well. Mixture of Al and Bonham sound. Just Awesome.

I'm gonna have to agree. Al sounds amazing, and that's one thing I really appreciate about him is that his snare is recognizable on every album. The preview clips are amazing. Just imagine how much better the whole album will be. I can't freaking wait. I must have some sort of mental disorder. I've been obsessing over this new album and have listened to the clips about 50 times.

I usually just focus on the guitar because I'm a guitar player, but what really sets this band apart from the imitators is the connection that Ed and Alex have together...it's seamless. That's probably why I've always just focused on the guitar; they are so tightly wound together it's like Eddie's playing guitar AND drums, or Alex is playing drums AND guitar. Just unreal.

A perfect example is "As Is" on the new album. From that clip, during the verses Eddie is playing the fast riff while Alex lays down a steady--but still tight and perfect--rhythm. But then during the chorus, Eddie slows down and Alex just wails on the double kick drums. Then when the solo hits, it's almost like they look at each other and are like: "race you to the finish?" and just have that masterful connection as they both play fast and tight.

The really have recaptured the magic...didn't think that possible after the last 15 years.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
