Beats Workin' - Official Discussion Thread

Can't forget this one, what was once Put Out The Lights. Trying to make sure all the individual songs have their own threads. Might make for easier discussion.

That means put EVERYTHING about this song in here, like the lyrics, etc.

I love what I've heard of this song. With that big intro I think this ia contender for a concert opener. I really miss "When it comes to about that time" (one of my favorite VH lyrics ever for some reason) but this is what it's all about for me. As much as I love the faster harder stuff we've heard, this is probably gonna be in my top three.
What once upon a time made Van Halen unique in the progression of metal and hard rock (besides Eddie’s prowess as a guitarist) was its sense of fun, its willingness to be not just over the top, but weird.

Like I said, they should have left Let's Get Rockin' and Put Out The Lights alone...I thought the lyrics were cool the way they were. But I actually do like the new melody and the chorus, but yeah it's gonna be hard to get used to the new lyrics. How often can you say that? A new song is coming out and you need to get used to the lyrics being wrong. HAHA!!

Great to hear this update. Loved the original lyrics but the pdated melody is a winner.

Dave should drop the verses an octave at least part of the time. That C he's hitting at the top of his range will give him a heart attack. I'm actually kinda impressed he can get up in that stratosphere without falsetto. Did he ever reach that high outside of shrieks and howls in the old days?

    Default Lyrics?

Here's my best guess at the lyrics... I definitely need help decifering Dave's craziness! Here is what it sounds like phonetically to me. (Even though I know it's wrong in a lot of spots)

Get it yet? I’m wearin’ a tail
I’ve been readin’ what the proverbs say
How ‘bout a great, big slice for bail?
    Otherwise, some professional help

Beats workin’ - startin’ on my empathy
Drugs are workin’... on the rest of me
    Livin’ life in luxury
Sho’ ‘nuff! We be workin’ no way

In a land line sea, you need a line on the scene (???)
    It beats workin’, baby
It’s red hot, if you like it or not
Don’t you know that, it beats workin’ baby
It’s red hot, if you like it or not

    What if you crawl?
Stand between the stages of (wolf and door?)?
    Heads and tails
Of the same brand, caught like a rat
    Just like the man said

Beats workin’ - startin’ on my empathy
Drugs are workin’... on the rest of me

Dave went too high on this one. As of now, it is the biggest disappointment on the album (in my opinion). Kind of sounds like "Drop in the Bucket" at one point.

Had he not reached as much, I probably would have loved it. One of the reasons I've always preferred DLR was you can sing along to the songs and usually (with the radio blasting) hit the notes. In this case, you will be in pain the entire time and it won't sound good.

But then again, I didn't like Intruder the 1st time I heard it, and I love it now. So maybe in a week I will love this.
    Right here I say....

Not much love for this tune? I know Dave sounds kind of strained in the verses, but I love it. Sounds like it could be played in a strip club...dirty, sleazy and full of attitude. The guitar tone also sounds great. Can't wait to hear the whole thing.

This song has a killer hook. The chorus has been stuck in my head for days now and for some reason makes me think of KISS. I tend to agree that the verses should have been lower. Dave has proved all over this album that his mid range still sounds perfect. I cringe when he feels the need to reach like that. It's not necessary.

I'm looking forward to this song more than the others. The original was one of my favorites that I always have on my playlists. I agree with Brett they should have left it be, but to hear it in full quality instead of the demo quality makes up for it.

From what I read in another thread, someone who got to hear the whole thing says the outro to this song is awesome.

If this album ends up being Van Halen's last, hopefully this song will be the finale the band deserves.

That's the great thing about this, we still have all of the outros and most of the solos to look forward to! I've been jamming out to these 90s/120s clips, but to think that some songs still have 2 or 3 more minutes of amazing music to them is mind blowing.

I loved Put Out the Lights, but I like Beats Workin better. They kept the fun vibe and just switched up the melody which I think is actually more memorable.

I like Fast Eddie gettin' ready, but this sounds like it's going to be a killer fun cut.

One thing I like about the songs that have their roots in the demos is that I still have the demos to listen to. It's not like the new song erases the demo, never to be heard again. They live together. I get two versions of this particular tune, one that I've loved for years and one that it sounds like I will like just as much, if not more!
