hey guys,

last friday i finally bought Dweezil Zappa's "Automatic" cd; i remembered that Eddie had some inputs on it, the cd was cheap (it was a huge sale) so i decided to take a shot...

i put the cd on my car when i was driving home... it's a good cd... but i couldn't see any EVH fingerprint on it... lots of Vai influence.

so i was getting a bit disapointed, not with the music on the cd, cause i couldn't smell anything that had a VH touch on it.

my disapointment lasted until the very begining of the last track, Purple Guitar... man... i'm 999999999999.99% sure that it's Eddie Van Halen himself playing the tune... and, what a fucking tune!!!

almost 10 minutes of the best guitar solos and riffs someone could even dream... a mix of Eruption with Me Wise Magic...

i was more than happy with the cd, and delighted with the song Eddie performed on it; he's not credited, but i'm sure any of us can recognize the brown sound... awesome surprise!!!
=\//-/= LIVE: once again, i'll make it!!!

Cool UT

You should rip it into mp3 and send it over! I'd love to hear it.

Sorry dude. That is NOT Eddie playing on "Purple Guitar." Dweezil is a good mimic of Eddie and that song is his tip of the hat to Eddie's sound and style. Actually, it's really only the intro that has that Van Halen-esqe sound to it. But, kudos to Dweezil to putting in down on tape. . .he's the ONLY person lately that is giving us any Van Halen tone.

Eddie. . . .where are you?????????

Jape,

ok, i might respect your opinion... but i'll sure convert it to mp3 and upload it... i'm still sure it's Eddie, it's almost impossible that anyone could make a guitar sound like that... let's see it...

I just got done listening to it. Its on Morpheus. ONE user had it, and I got it......sorry UT. Not eddie IMO. I think Jape wrapped it up pretty nicely with the "tip of the hat" comment towards eds style, but I really dont think its ed. About 4 or 5 sections really made me listen though!

I WISH.

Uncle Ted,
Jape is definitely right.
Dweezil CAN mimic Edward pretty damn good.
Also, you can damn well bet that if Edward did play on Dweezil's record,we would know about it.Dweezil wants to sell records just like the next guy and that would be a great way to do it.(by having Edward officially playing so to speak)
The guitar rags alone would have put the two on the cover page...........no,what am I thinking?Slipknot would be on the cover!!Now those guys can outplay Edward and Dweezil ten times over!!

Just wanted to add my two cents to the discussion,

Is this CD your referring to Dweezil's most recent release? If so I have heard its great! I have an old Dweezil cassette a buddy taped for me several years ago. It has several cameos on it including Warren DeMartino from Ratt, Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme, and a Kick Ass Version of the Bee Gees classic "Staying Alive" sung by none other than Donnie Osmond! Anyway, my favorite tune features Nuno Bettencourt on lead. The first time I heard the tune I swore it was Edward. The style and tone is unmistakeablely Edwardesque! My buddy later told me it was Nuno. Apparently all these guitar slingers love Edward. Just thought I'd mention this little tidbit.....

When Dweezil Zappa goes to buy a guitar or amp, he plays the "Unchained" riff to test out the new equipment. Enough said!

The version of "Staying Alive" that's on the CD "Confessions" is sung by Donny Osmond. There is another version of the song (recorded by Dweezil and friends) that is sung by Ozzy. That version was not put on the album due to contractual issues. The Ozzy version popped up on Napster a year or two ago.

So you're both right.

Confessions is a great album with a lot of cool guitars. Guests included Zakk Wylde, Warren DeMartini, Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Lukather, Tim Pierce, and others.

Ok, as a HUGE Dweezil Zappa fan I can assure you that EVH did NOT play on that tune or any other Dweezil or Z song. I've got two Z (Dweezil's old kickass band)live bootlegs with Purple Guitar and
you can bet EVH didn't do a club tour with DZ in
'94. The song is on the new Automatic cd, but that cd is mostly older songs. Some dating back as far as '91. Purple Guitar was written in '93.

If you really want to hear DZ goofing on the EVH sound and style check out the Bone Us cd that comes with the Music for Pets cd at zappa.com. If your thinking EVH played on Purple Guitar, wait till you hear DZ's solo's on Chicken Out and BadAss. Remember, DZ met EVH when he was 12 and the two continue a friendship. DZ rips on Ed every now and then for fun and as a tribute to his guitar hero. However he himself has a style his own. Very underrated guitar player.

I must say this is the most interesting post in quite some time! I certainly agree with Trennasol, Dweezil is a very underrated guitar player. Its too bad there really isn't an interest in great guitar albums lately. I remember an interview Dweezil did with EVH at 5150 some years ago. I believe it was for Guitar magazine. They talked about their first meeting. Apparently Frank was a huge fan of Edward's as well. He invited Edward over to the Zappa household. Lo and behold, Steve Vai showed up and they had a short impromptu jam session. In the interview, Edward talked about how flattered he was that the great Frank Zappa liked his playing. This first meeting led to Edward coproducing Dweezil's first project. They both laughed at how nervous Dweezil was in the studio. Anyway, it was a very cool interview. I think it was just after the Balance tour in late '95
