Default Ed's Guitar Sound on Truth

I think this is my first thread starter..

Not liking Ed's sound at all on "Truth". It reminds me of that somewhat generic wall-of-sound guitar sound on most of F.U.C.K. IMO, Ed's sound worked better in mono, with the reverb in the other speaker. You can't beat Ed's sound on Van Halen 1, Fair Warning and 1984, though 5150 had some nice stereo guitar in places, but thus far the guitars on "Truth" just sound very un-Ed-like, more like hi-gain generic metal, than old school VH. Hey, I'm not stuck in the past, just not digging the guitar sounds at all right now. What say you guys?

I think the problem is that it's really the first time recording with his signature gear. In the past. he's always used old guitars and amps. This time, I don't think he did that. Regardless, Ed is recognizably Ed, so that's all that matters to me.

I agree to a point. His tone on most of the harder rocking songs sounds a lot like his live sound on the VH3 tour to me. Very surprised to hear the almost Buckethead-like tone at the beginning of Chinatown.

I agree that it's still recognizably Ed. It's not the return to brown sound I was expecting though.

It sounds like the natural progression Ed's tone. I don't hate it, it's not bad at all, but it's not his classic sound. That's just not what he's going for here.

I think with a new producer in tow and his new line of gear, Ed was trying to squeeze out every new sound he could from his guitars and amps and push them to the limit. He's also clearly not afraid of playing with effects like he used to be, as the opening to China Town indicates (and The Trouble With Never affirms).

It's still the best damn guitar playing on the planet, so I love it, but anyone expecting old school Van Halen guitar sounds, with the Marshall head and the rear loaded Kramer he made in his house will be disappointed. This is Eddie Van Halen with a line of personal gear at his disposal and a producer that is apparently pushing him to take chances.

Apparently, it kicks total ass, so I'm good with it.

The Sass Jordan version of Van Halen was the best...

I think some of it has to do with the fact that he has had to 'tune down' to match Dave's voice. A lot of bands have to do this now because the singers lose range with age. It's not really a big deal, they aren't 25 anymore! Couple that with the new gear and the fact we haven't had a new song in 8 years, it should sound different right? Remember, this is a NEW band according to Ed and Dave.

I really like his new guitars and sound. It would get boring if he never changed. I think he sounds more futuristic or current. If i wanted to hear van halen 1 again I'd listen to van halen 1.

He still has the best tone in the world. This is one thing I love about VH is they evolve as musicians. I think Eddie is a tone chaser but I don't think he is looking to recapture his classic tone. I think that is a big misnomer about him like he's lost his tone.

I also don't think he sounds generic at all. I know it's Eddie Van HAlen the second I hear it.

I would go as far to say the tech he is using is completely amazing. It's so dirty and clean sounding at the same time. You can hear every molecule of brown sound coming out of his guitar.

While all you guys are looking to recapture the past, Eddie is on another planet.

I actually can't tell from listening through my computer, when I get my CD I'll post my opinion.
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

Sounds fine to me. Tattoo sounds muddled... But the rest, I'm fine with.

I love the experimental side of Ed at times.

Burger King is rooted from it's "creation" of the Whopper, but if you think I won't try their Western BBQ Burger you're out of your mind.

I love his playing, not loving the tone. Too much like many others. Not uniquely enough unique Ed.
