Default Is Dave's Personality Taking Over His Singing Style?

The one constant complaint I'm hearing (and agree with, except for The Trouble with Never) is that Dave's trying to "cram" a lot of words into each verse of the songs that have been released. I'm enjoying the guitar/drums, but Dave seems to be forcing many lyrics for the first time, as if he's trying to compensate for many years of silence. From what I've heard so far, I wish he'd defer a bit more to the music. But, we all know he loves to talk.

Maybe. Dave has a lot to say apparently. Mayeb that's why he wigs out sometimes. He's been holding it in too long. I made a post about this before where I wish he would just let it flow and he is on record.

Dave has been waiting for this opportunity for a long, long time and he is diving headfirst into it.

My biggest issue with Dave so far was potentially ruining potentially one of the best VH songs (Stay Frosty) with an extremely annoying, can’t imagine why the producer kept it, “UH UH UH ! UH UH UH!” It frickin’ hurts my ears with headphones on. WTF? That song could have been perfection. Like adding that UH UH UH to Panama. Would that have been good?

I think that's a fair honest comment. I'm surprised how good he sounds for most part (yes, I know he never had great voice) but yeah, he does tend cram a lot of words into verse. To me, it's a microcosm of Dave's personality. He's a very animated and excitable guy and it comes through in his vocal stylings. I'd prefer if it were toned down but I'm not going to poo poo these songs because they sound great for most part. Never thought I get one more, DLR/Van Halen song much less 13.

Yeah, I was thinking this morning that Ted Templeton would have said "come 'on Dave, gimme a break". Seriously, I agree with you. Somebody should have reigned him in a bit (yeah, I know your thinking, who could do that)

I know what you're saying but it is a blues song and it's a nod to many other blues songs with the same thing in them. Maybe it could have been backed off a little I don't know.

I think I found Dave's inspiration for his current look and mannerisms...

Dave probably realizes like most people that the chance of VH creating a new album with him was very slim. Well it happened and I think he's probably running around like a guy who just won lotto. As much as I like Dave his career was in the toilet for almost 20 years, people can deny it and mention the solo albums he released in the 90's..etc..but it was dead. The last album worth a shit to me was A Little Ain't Enough back in '91. Some people love all of his shit.

Anyway, I think his singing style has gotten a little too campy over the past twenty years. I think he tries to make up for what he lost with over the top exaggerated vocal inflections and cramming in as many words as he can. But that's Dave and he still adds character to VH.

Oh come on... Dave's singing style has always been drenched and dripping with his personality. One couldn't take over the other... nor exist without the other.

I'd be fine with it, but it is way too overpowering for the song. Toned down, it may have been fine. The 2nd time around during the acoustic part was in your face UH UH UH!. Give it a rest, let's hear a few seconds of the acoustic.

Imagine him doing that at the beginning of Take Your whiskey home. I understand the bluesy part, but damn, it put a major damper what sounds to be one of their best songs ever. I keep listening trying to get over it. I keep trying to think I'll get used to it and love it (like everything from VH1 to 1984. But this one is tough. I say the producer f'd it up (if he even had control to take it away)
    Right here I say....
