Just saw this little blurb in an advertisement for an Alice in Chains book "Unchained"

"Unchained..." also contains exclusive stories about Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, Pauly Shore, Matt Dillon, VAN HALEN, Pearl Jam and Evel Knievel. NO OTHER BOOK GIVES YOU THE INSIDE STORY OF ALICE IN CHAINGS FROM THE BEGINNING IN 1987 THROUGH THE PRESENT.

Has anyone read this book I'm curious as to what the Van Halen story was..

You mean they named it after the best Van Halen song ever? Maybe I'll check it out if I see it at the library.

Well, I don't know if you know these stories, but, when Alice opened for Vh in '91 on the carnal knowledge tour, during a break in touring,Jerry Cantrell,AIC's guitarist, told Eddie about how he would really kill for a couple of eddie's 5150 amps.
So Eddie surprised Jerr with a couple of said amps at his house in seattle..
Another funny story was when Nirvana were playing in L.A in '93 at the Forum, Jerry rang Eddie and told him to come down to the show because Kurt Cobain really wanted to meet him.
So Ed went down, but by the time he got there he was really drunk off his face, big time, and kind of made a dick of himself in front of everybody.
But this kinda endeared him to Kurt and Courtney and they really hit it off in a big way to the point where Eddie asked Kurt if he could get up and jam with them during the show but Kurt reportedly said "I love ya' Eddie but how would it look, US, the kings of ALTERNATIVE gettin' the king of Mainstream rock on stage together..doesn't do our image much good"
There is actually some footage of this very event on Nirvana home video "Live-tonight-sold out"
Eddie looks like he's having the time of his life...

Former Foo and Nirvana (amongst others) second guitarist Pat Smear was interviewed several years back and talked extensively about the LA Forum Nirvana show that Ed hung out at. I guess EVH at one point was crying about how he felt that VH were all washed up and he wanted to get out there and jam in front of the hip kids, but I think they didn't bring Ed up because they didn't know any common songs.

What I found the most interesting was he said that Dave Grohl used to grab the guitars backstage and start jammin (back in the days when he was known as only a drummer) and Pat and Kurt would look at each other and say, "This guys smokes both of us!".

He also said that he really hated EVH when Van Halen first started because he knew he wouldn't be able to play like that, which is one of the things that turned him to punk.

It was in a Tower Records type of in-store magazine if I recall.

Here's some info about VH on the official AIC site:

    AUGUST 1991 through JANUARY 1992
Band tours with Van Halen. Eddie thinks the band needs some wardrobe tips and buys everyone new Doc Martens and plaid shir(including some for himself).

    DECEMBER 1991
Hunting in the woods with his brother, Jerry Cantrell believes November has 31 days - he misses December 1st concert with Van Halen. Columbia buys him a pocket calculator for Christmas.
