    Default The Dumbing of America

So, my oldest son is starting middle school next year, therefore this evening we hard an orientation at the school.

Come to find, that Advanced Placement or Honors classes don't mean what they did when I was growing up.

You see, the kids not in AP were having their self esteem damaged, therefore everyone is in an AP class, and the general class is what we use to term remedial.

And you may ask, what do they do with the kids who are actually advanced intellectually and will need the higher level of instruction, is there an Advance AP or something of that nature?

Nah, because then we would be hurting the self esteem of the poor AP kids, we can't have that.

    Made my head hurt.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

ya, they got rid of all AP classes here until HS.

I can kinda see the point of not seperating until then, can always send em to private school... but just cuz your kid smart doesnt mean you have money.. so I see both sides.

We have Pre-AP in Jr High here. It's tougher classes than the non Pre-AP. My daughter is already doing Algebra I as an 8th grader. When she gets in high school, the AP classes earn her college credits.

here's what I don't get. we are supposed to be so far behind the rest of the world in Science Math and even Geography and what we are worried about is the students feelings?

those students have a right to know how badly we are failing them in relation to other developed countries

I wonder if these students would be so concerned about their own feelings? We need to start by giving them credit for being smarter and more savvy than we were at their age.

why do we think that it is our job to protect them from every bad feeling and every inconvenience and every frustration?

NO... it is our job to teach them how to DEAL WITH things that make them feel bad, and inconvenienced and frustrated.

Oh shit man, I know exactly what you mean.

In high school, I started off in the IB program. Did very well the first two years, but the course work was not directed towards what I wanted and it would have been a setup for failure, so we figure AP is the next best thing. I walk in the first day and me and maybe 3 other kids were actually AP-level. I do not think I am a genius or that I'm above everybody else, but it's not hard to tell these other kids were not that bright. I quit AP after the first day of school and switched to Dual-Enrollment. THAT is the best route now. You don't have to worry about tests to get college credit, you already are getting the credit (as long as you're passing the class).

They've been pushing idiots into AP because school grades are not based on how many students are passing AP, but rather how many students are in AP. Therefore this year all of a sudden these schools that are actually "D"s and "F"s are now be considered "A"s and "B"s.

Anybody that has a kid still in school, I strongly suggest looking into Dual-Enrollment during high school.

Failure, rejection, and losing are good for the soul. They teach and produce good things in people like how to perservere and overcome, which will be needed in abundance as an adult. I almost weep for kids today. They are being misled with political correctness.

This PC mentallity will be the death of American and European culture.

I think the problem is that commuity leaders - at any level - are making decisions that pander to the opinion of their voters. Nobody is taking a stand unless its inline with public opinion. If leaders are afraid to take unpopular decisions then very little progress will be made. And this is evident in the Ameican education system. Smart kids, sharp kids with great potenial are not being pushed to excel and product is what you see everyday. They are being betrayed by the generation that is supposed to prepare them for the future.

There was a great reference to this issue in The Incredibles cartoon (a masterpiece IMO) where Mr Incredible is arguing with his wife about why his son is not allowed to be all he could be and instead is forced to celebrate mediocrity.
Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.

Having grown up in Southern California, I have seen first hand what this mentality will do do to this country. In the 70's with an influx of , ahem, motherfuckers who shouldn't have been here in the first place, the California public school system was forced to accomodate our invaders by re-setting the grading curve so that these dipshit 3rd worl.......

Nevermind, we put the sign out there so it is our own fucking fault.

We have nationalized, socialized education in this country. I'm not sure where the surprise part comes in.

Not sure hos socialising education brings down the collective dumbing. Technically it just means that everyone should have equal access to education; is that wrong?

Most of the really "smart" countries in the world have nationalized\socialized education.
