A Fan Friendly Edward Van Halen...

Between the snippets on VHND of the convos reflecting on the old days, the show at Cafe Wha?, the release of a "deluxe version" of ADKOT, and now this teaser of what we can expect of the "Downtown Sessions"- You have to wonder whats come over Ed that he is now "jumping on board" and willing to do all the fan friendly stuff all of a sudden...?
I remember back in the old days Ed's attitude about certain things- a live album for example he used to say he hated the idea (then they released RHRN which is way over produced and sucks); back in '04 he said something along the lines of "I have a life" when asked about fans on the internet and message boards, and most of all saying that VH songs are not meant to be played acoustically when asked about the possibility of an Unplugged release...
My first guess is that his sobriety has to be the #1 benefactor... My next thought is that DLR's influence and PR savvy style is a very close 2nd. I'm sure he's realized being fan friendly is part of the job and if VH just "plays some ball" they could have an incredible year and moreso than make a bunch of $$ -holy shit VH could actually be recognized as relevant in the industry again?!?!?!? COULD YOU POSSIBLY IMAGINE????
At any rate- ITS ALL AWESOME!!!

It very could be a clean and more fan-friendly Eddie or it could be Dave's influence or it could be the record complany suggesting ideas or a combination of some or all of these. All I know is that I am really enjoying the PR I've seen so far.

Hopefully, they will do some interviews but not holding my breath.

I'd love to see / hear Ed do some interviews - if only to hear what his voice sounds like these days. He was sounding very bad at one point, what with all the cigarette-smoking and the removal of part of his tongue so I'm curious as to whether that's improved at all. The gruff backing vocals on "Tattoo" suggest not but you never know!

It is probably a combination of things and also a bit of a mirage. For one he got married which can help or hurt ones outlook on life. Looks like it is working. Second is supposed sobriety however one must look at how he was during VH3 cause he was probably the most sober during that era. Might not be a good thing. Third is money with Interscope and Live Nation. Fourth is maybe he just had an awakening with surviving cancer, having his hand operated on so guitar is enjoyable to play and being content in life. Why be so bitter?

That said it all can be fake and he is being forced into this role due to the album. However with him quitting smoking, he is showing that he is willing to make changes in his life. I am thinking he will be a bit more friendly than years past.

Whatever the reason.. it's a fab thing to witness as a VH fan.

Listen to the interviews about his old Volvo, club days, etc that they've released a couple weeks ago -- his voice sounds like it did 15 years ago.

He wants to play music with his son, and he wants it to be a positive experience for his son. That leads to everything else.

Yeah, thanks - I did listen to them but was hoping it might just be a poor recording...I suppose he's done himself too much damage for his vocal chords to produce the nice timbre his voice had earlier on. Shame!

Agreed! That has to be a huge, probably the #1 factor- which i believe led to his sobriety in the first place... Wolf is young and at the VERY BEGINNING of his career... I'm sure Ed wants to be as much a part of that as possible for as long as he can. Would be so great to see them take a year off after ADKOT runs its course and then get back in the studio!

Or the really good background vocals in the new video. He hasn't sounded this good since 95-96. (And of course by good I mean the best he's done in comparison with past recordings and tours)

Do you know, SS, Ed's backing vocals were actually the bit of "Tattoo" that I wasn't all that keen on, to be honest. Each to their own, I suppose!

I liked them in "Humans Being" because I felt that they really suited the dark nature of the song - but "Tattoo" has a much 'lighter' subject matter and so (I felt) they didn't work quite as well.

Personally, I think that the subject of backing vocals and the adaptations the band has had to make since Mike's departure would form a very interesting part of any future interviews - but I'd imagine that such issues would be off-limits, unfortunately, even if they do concern the music rather than personal relationships...

I think that's probably a huge part of it. He seems happy now and as people age they start to think about how many opportunities they have missed and how many opportunities they have left

I hope that he is also doing it for himself. I think there have been times in the past where he has tried to be more fan friendly, but I just don't think that it comes easily to him

some people like Sam and Dave are built to be gregarious, social people and for other people it is an effort
