    Default Dave's Vocals: 2007 vs 2012

Not gonna get too into it, just haven't been too happy with Dave's vocal tone between WHA, the single, and YRGM acoustic. As long as he stays in his vocal range (no yelping) for the tour and hopefully on the album I'll be happy. I don't expect him to sound like 1978 Dave but I was hopin' for 2007 Dave.

Anyway, It's just my opinion and means nothing.

Here's Dave in 07 sounding great hittin' his higher register with balls to it:

Not for nothing but that show was over 4 years ago. It's amazing how quick time passes which is one of the reasons I was so anxious that they get the new album done before one of them becomes "unable" to perform.

Then again, he may sound just as good or better by the time the tour gets underway. I guess we'll see.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I loved Dave's performance at the Wha. He still has the coolest voice ever in rock for me.

I thought he sounded great at the Wha? show.

Yeah, there are some better vids out there with decent audio. I think EmeraldEyes took some better audio from the Cafe Wha? show and combined that with the video shot by the infamous and annoying Cafe Wha Asian Dude (CWAD) guy

Dave sounds a lot like he does in '07.

In '07, all we had were the arena shows to judge by. Now, we have a new single, a club show, an acoustic song and eventually a new album and another arena tour. I'll hold the comparison until I hear him live this year.

So far from the sample clips "Blood and Fire", "Stay Frosty" and "The Trouble with Never" I really like how Dave is sounding. Staying in his range.

Just heard a sample of "Outta Space". It's a good example of Dave going beyond his range. His vocal tone changes for the worse, gets thin... IMO.
Aside from that, I think he sounds great when he stays away from that high range territory.

One thing for sure is that Dave will sound considerably different to the casual fan who is used to hearing his voice on the classic songs. It should be interesting to hear the reaction, because his voice has changed a lot since then. Gone are the squeals and screams and chest voice approach to higher notes. There is no doubt to me that Dave has been working on a new technique on and off since the early '90s. He began attempting to blend his chest voice with his head voice on ALAE and utilized this technique through YFLM. The problem was, it sounded weak and nasally compared to his previous technique which was simply to belt out everything high. He continued using this same technique on the two BOV1 tracks and DLR Band. In concert during that time, his voice was shot. If anyone ever saw his Finland '99 concert video, you can tell that his technique was not properly blended, so his voice would crack and do all sorts of weird things when he went for high notes. This is when he began a long run of touring mostly Van Halen material. By '03, he pretty much abandoned the new technique and went back to attempting old-school screams, including the kind where he would sing in his chest voice and swoop into the whistle register at the end of the phrase ("I'll get her....AHH!" - Panama). I remember some bootlegs out there where he actually was able to do these techniques pretty well. He even hit a few multi-toned RWTD screams, although they were a bit raspy. I was happy to hear Dave sing mostly in his chest voice last tour, but he certainly approached higher parts carefully and less shouty than he had in the past. I believe he had some sort of training so he was able to bridge the gap between his chest voice and his head voice so he would not push his chest voice and blow it out nightly. On the new album, Dave validates the previous statement, especially in songs like "You and Your Blues" where he uses a blended voice for the chorus and navigates down to his chest voice fairly seamlessly. I doubt that his voice is perfectly trained due to years of abuse through smoking and poor technique, but he has the ability to go for higher notes than he did in the past. He may sound like a strained blues singer when he does it, but he sounds more capable of blending both his old style and his new style. One thing that confuses me, however, is the complete absence of screams. Dave still hit some live on the last tour, even if they were just "Wow!"s. Maybe he's past that?

If you listen to the 90sec clip of 'As Is' he lets out his trade mark "Wow!!!".....reminds me of Dave in the '80's.

Really... What the hell is Roth doing in the Chorus? He needs to stay out of that high range and it will sound fine. He's over doing it for no reason.
