Default Modern Italian Cruise Ship with 4,200 aboard runs aground and sinks

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/16/wo...d-captain.html

    From Wiki:

On 13 January 2012, the Costa Concordia ran aground on a reef at around 21:00 local time (UTC+1) off Isola del Giglio, having left Civitavecchia earlier that evening at the beginning of a seven-day cruise.

At about 20:00, passengers were in the dining hall when there was a sudden loud bang, which a crew member (speaking over the intercom) ascribed to an "electrical failure". An hour later a general emergency was announced; those on board said the boat suddenly listed to the port side.[14] Passengers were advised to put on their life-jackets.[15] The ship developed a list of approximately 20° to starboard, which caused problems in launching the lifeboats, with some passengers jumping into the water to swim to shore. At least three people died,[16] 14 others were injured, and 41 are still unaccounted for.[7][8] According to the local coastguard, 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew members were on board at the time.[17]

    One word: lawsuit.

If anyone followed this story, the passengers were lied to about emergency procedures. And the crew were essentially useless in terms of how to handle the situation. I can see a class action suit here unfortunately...

It's also being claimed that it was down to some sort of major mistake by the Captain...

It didn't exactly sink, but the ship is slightly f'd up, that's for sure.

Yeah, lawsuits will be flying around with this for years. It's amazing how this could of happened given modern ships and technology, but it shows that you can't develop technology to fix stupid.

Read that they already think the things a constructive total loss. I'm sure the insurance company is thrilled with this...apparently this captain took it off the programmed course on purpose. Wonder if theres any language where they wont have to pay for this.

Also they're concerned this thing is gonna slide off that rock it leaning on.

I haven't seen that. I'd be suprised if they scrap the ship (assuming they can get it off the rocks in one piece), it isn't that old, and new ships are not exactly cheap. I would think, even with the amount of damage this ship has, it is cheaper to salvage it and overhaul it, then change the name and put it back into service.

I guess we'll see in time.

It looks like the Captain was carrying out a 'sail by' as a salute to a collegue. He should have been 4 miles out to sea at the time of the accident, instead he was only 300 METRES out!

Class action suits are rare in Italy, but Italian consumer advocacy organization Codacons said more than 70 passengers had indicated that they wanted to join a class-action approach to winning compensation from Costa.

"Our aim is to make every passenger obtain an indemnity of at least euro10,000 (more than $12,500) for the material damage suffered and for moral damage, such as the terror suffered, ruined vacations and the grave risks that they ran," said Codacons president Carlo Rienzi.

They said on Cable TV that that maritime max payment according to some international agreement is just $75,000 per person.

you would think that having thousands of peoples lives in your hands would be enough to give anyone a feeling of responsibility and oh, I don't know what the word is I'm looking for, but dignity and importance

you wouldn't think you would need to do such a thing to draw attention to yourself and your staff

    Coast Guard: Hello.

    Captain: Good evening, chief.

Coast Guard: Listen, this is De Falco from Livorno. Am I speaking with the captain?

Captain: Good evening, Chief De Falco.

Coast Guard: Tell me your name, please.

Captain: I am Captain Schettino, chief.

    Coast Guard: Schettino?

    Captain: Yes.

Coast Guard: Listen, Schettino. There are people trapped on board. Now, you go with your lifeboat. Under the bow of the ship, on the right side, there is a ladder. You climb on that ladder and go on board the ship. Go on board the ship and get back to me and tell me how many people are there. Is that clear. I am recording this conversation, Captain Schettino.

(Captain tries to speak but Coast Guard can't hear him clearly. Voices in the Coast Guard room.)

Coast Guard: Speak up! (captain tries to speak) Captain, put your hand over the microphone and speak in a louder voice!

Captain: At this moment the ship is listing.

Coast Guard: There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?

Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!

(Noise can be heard in the background. Apparently other Coast Guard officers are shouting to each other in the same room about "the ship, the ship")

    Captain: Please ...

Coast Guard: There is no 'please' about it. Get back on board. Assure me you are going back on board!

Captain: I'm in a lifeboat, I am under here. I am not going anywhere. I am here.

Coast Guard: What are you doing, captain?

Captain: I am here to coordinate the rescue...

Coast Guard (interrupting): What are you coordinating there! Get on board! Coordinate the rescue from on board! Are you refusing?

Captain: No, I am not refusing.

Coast Guard: Are you refusing to go aboard, captain? Tell me the reason why you are not going back on board.

Captain: (inaudible)... there is a another lifeboat...

Coast Guard (interrupting, yelling): You get back on board! That is an order! There is nothing else for you to consider. You have sounded the "Abandon Ship." Now I am giving the orders. Get back on board. Is that clear? Don't you hear me?

    Captain: I am going aboard.

Coast Guard: Go! Call me immediately when you are on board. My rescue people are in front of the bow.

Captain: Where is your rescue craft?

Coast Guard: My rescue craft is at the bow. Go! There are already bodies, Schettino. Go!

Captain: How many bodies are there?

Coast Guard: I don't know! ... Christ, you should be the one telling me that!

Captain: Do you realize that it is dark and we can't see anything?

Coast Guard: So, what do you want to do, to go home, Schettino?! It's dark and you want to go home? Go to the bow of the ship where the ladder is and tell me what needs to be done, how many people there are, and what they need! Now!

Captain: My second in command is here with me.

Coast Guard: Then both of you go! Both of you! What is the name of your second in command?

Captain: His name is Dmitri (static)"

Coast Guard: What is the rest of his name? (static) You and your second in command get on board now! Is that clear?

Captain: Look, chief, I want to go aboard but the other lifeboat here has stopped and is drifting. I have called ...

Coast Guard (interrupting): You have been telling me this for an hour! Now, go aboard! Get on board, and tell me immediately how many people there are!

    Captain: OK, chief.

    Coast Guard: Go! Immediately!

This sounds like something out of a movie...
