Oh please! If there were no Van Halen, there would be no Metallica. Van Halen brought rock back in the late 70's. They changed the landscape of music and provided for the 80's hard rock scene. This is a no brainer.

I agree =VH= changed the landscape of rock music but you can't compare ATBL to Master of Puppets .

Seen metallica twice once on Monsters of Rock and the other back in 2000 Stadium tour. Seen VH 17 times . Metallica was a awesome show in 2000 never realized how hard a drummer works until that show. But IMO VH puts on a better show.

Not to ruffle any feathers, but what does "better" even mean? Every band is different.

Is Metallica "better" than Van Halen? That seems like a pointless debate.

Is Eddie a "better" guitar player than Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page? If you say yes, then I wonder if you have a concept of the fact that Eddie would not even exist without Clapton or Page. That is his foundation. This is not a knock on Eddie. He's the reason I became a musician, but I'm sure he would say the same thing. If it weren't for Cream, he wouldn't have his amazing blues foundation, and if he didn't see Jimmy Page do that pull-off at the forum, he may not have thought about his revolutionary ideas.

That's why I think the term "better" is pointless.

Many folks say that Steve Vai and Satriani are "better" than EVH, but it can be argued that without Eddie's influence, they would not have developed their styles into what they are today.

I think "better" makes no sense. It's all about what came before and what you do with those influences.

    My two cents...

Van Halen is my favorite band period. But if I had to categorize: Van Halen is my favorite 'rock' band. Metallica is my favorite 'metal' band. Pearl Jam is my favorite 'grunge' band. There really is no better between the three. They're all in my musical family.
