    Default Co-Workers...

Has anyone had the new Van Halen tour get brought up at work? This happened to me today. This dude goes, "Oh look at this, Van Halen is coming to town." I guess he saw a news blurb on the internet or something. I said, "Yeah, I'm going. It should be a lot of fun." Then he goes, "Yeah? With the original lineup?" Thought he might not know who was going to be singing, and before I could tell him, he says, I mean, is Eddie going to be there? Because his son took his place a few years ago!" I couldn't believe it. I was shocked, then told him that his son replaced the bass player, Michael Anthony, and Roth is back singing. But two other co-workers were also pretty firm that Wolfgang had replaced Eddie.

So I guess the point is, this is how far out of touch some people are about Van Halen. Some people actually think Wolfgang took over for Eddie. The guy that brought it up then said, "Oh well, all you have to do is wait for them to play Jump and then you can leave." Do casual fans really like Jump that much?

That's not even a casual fan. That guy is clueless.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

That's funny. Metal Marc used to be my co-worker, but he moved so the VH and music conversations in general have slowed down at work. No one has mentioned the tour at work...except me.

Today I asked my friend if he would be willing to record a lecture for me next month while I take a day off school to go see Van Halen. His first comment was, "I recognize that name from Joe Dirt ...something about Van Halen and Van Hagar." Then he proceeded to ask me if they were an instrumental only group, or if they had vocals too. Granted, he's a generation removed from the Van Halen era, but still.

Yesterday my roommate had a blank look on her face when I mentioned Van Halen. Then, when I played "the only song you might know" (read: Jump), she recognized it as the song all the basketball players come running out to at games.

    This generation is doomed.
Van Halen will rock your face off!

I worked with a girl who was about 27 or so and she asked me who I listened to. I mentioned Van Halen and she said "do they sing Livin' on a Prayer"? I told her she would probably know them from Jump and Panama. She recognized Jump but not Panama.

I'm 28. The average age at my office is about 30. Let's just say that it's not much of a conversation starter in my work circle. I feel like I have a secret identity or something - Van Halen fan by night...

Interestingly enough, I overheard some people talking about Van Halen at work yesterday. I just started subcontracting as Mac IT person before Christmas so I don't really know anybody there. I was gonna happen by put my 2 cents in but by the time I walked by the scrum had broken up.
