Default Tattoo Hasn't Been Mastered Yet?

Let me start out by saying I love the new song. Itís got a great groove and the recording job is better than almost any Van Halen track to date. But since this morning, something didnít sit right with me and I came to the clumsy conclusion that this song hasnít been mastered all the way, which is common for single releases before an album. What I heard was:

ē A weird mid-low bump in the bass guitars around 300Hz that made the track muddy and boxy (nice to hear VH distorting their bass guitar now though Ė sorry Mikey)
ē Guitars that sounded too brassy, lacking a fullness
ē Vocals that didnít nestle into the mix
ē A lost kick drum Ė Címon! Make it punch me in the gut!
ē A low volume (relatively low RMS value)
    ē A digital-ish sterility

All these issues are typical for a song that hasnít been sent to the mastering house yet, so I decided to master the song myself and see if I could help it out. Obviously, weíll all find out come February if Iím blowing smoke or not (I do drink a LOT of wine), but I still thought it was worth a go.

Hereís what I came up with. Punched up, pulled out the boxy tone, made Wolfie sound meaner, gave the vocals a more compressed rock flavor to pop out at you and bounced the whole track to tape. These are all subtle differences, but itís shit I geek out on (hey, itís how I make a living). Iíve met Ross a few times and heís a great guy, so this is no way me trying to one-up him. I wish I were half the producer he is and itís a great mix. Tons to work with. But hereís mine:

Didn't mess with the tempo or the arrangement... Who does that?!?

Nice work Hendmik ...i was blaming it to be a poor mp3....love being able to hear the kick in the mix!..i was also hearing an odd sound during Eds solo like a limiter cutting in to quickly or something "wishy washy" but you seemed to have sorted that as well...may have just been my speakers not handling the volume haha!..anyway thanks for that...i hope they do fix it for the album ...and if not ..i hope you master the whole album the way you have done Tattoo ... i will buy the wine!! CHEERS!

I love the song, and I have to say, your mix is at least superior to my iTunes download. Well done, sir.

Sounds good. Can definitely here the difference when Ed's solo starts and Dave's vocals are below it now. At least that's what I think I heard.

I look forward to listening to this on my home stereo. Speakers here at work don't do any music justice.

    Yep, great remix/remaster.
I wonder if the issue is the download? Will the CD version be better? I can't see them releasing this new single without it being mastered, it's too important for the band. Lets blame it on Amazon/itunes/whoever...
