    Default "Tattoo" Backing Vocals: Auto-Tune?

Do the backing vocals sound like they're processed with any kind of pitch-correction software to anyone else? Not to the degree that guys like T-Pain use it, but just enough to smooth it out?

I would actually be surprised if they're not. Everyone uses it now, it's just difficult to "hear" it if it's just to nudge a few cents here and there. There's always little imperfections and differences in layered vocal tracks, even when hitting the right notes and working hard to tighten it up.

The "Tattoo / Tatto" part is as tight as possible and pitch perfect, which leads me to believe that the vocals were chopped and tightened in Pro Tools and the pitches were all nudged to perfection.

But hell, what do I know?

It probably has some tuning, reverb, delay, chorus, or any of the other vocal enhancing effects that every band has used in the last several decades.

I have no idea, but I wouldn't doubt it. I always liked on the original albums how they would leave "errors" on the finished song - Everybody wants some, etc. Eddie said it makes it seem more "live". But, times change.

I was listening for that last night. It kind of struck me that way, but I gave it a good listen. I don't actually think it's Auto-tune, but there is some definite Harmonizer or pitch shifting going on to richen things up a bit. There's also the typical low milliseconds of delay.
I really don't think it's Auto-tune, but yes to some processing.
They did leave some errors like where he gets a little out of the bubble of his range before the solo, so I'm thinking if they had Auto-tune in mind, that would be a prime candidate, but it wasn't. Kinda glad they left it. True to the old VH credo of leaving in little mistakes.

I think some of the "weird" sound people are hearing is due to the dissonant harmonies they used. Classic VH harmonies have been a third or a fifth above the melody line, but - and correct me if I'm wrong - I can't think of many times VH has used two harmony notes that are so close together...I think they're only a step apart, and that could definitely sound non-Van Halenish at first.

I happen to like it, a lot.

I'd go as far as to say it's nearly universal. The iPod practically requires mainstream studio releases to be hyper-compressed and overly produced.

It's the George Lucas syndrome he had w star wars. Star wars n VH were perfection when the technology was raw and unrefined. Having to rely and the talent u have and those around u. Years later when technology allows u to tweak and redo everything w a click of a mouse, it's only natural to explore those avenues , right or wrong. Lucas was wrong. VH seems to have went Dow the tech road on tattoo a bit here. It's a pretty slick sounding song with little live feel to it. It's like a touched up photo of a model - not needed.

I don't have a trained enough ear to tell you exactly what part Mikey sang, but you are correct in that it was either a third or a 5th of the root. In some cases, it might have been a 7th or an octave + a 3rd.

There isn't any such thing as a harmony "one-step" apart. The first and second notes of the major scale are actually dissonant. The different timbres/ranges of each voice can fool the ear sometimes, but I just don't hear a vocal harmony on Tattoo. I'm hearing voices in unison.

I agree. I'm hearing two tones on the same note, not a harmony. And I'm definitely hearing some vocal double tracking.

Most important, though; I'm hearing Van Halen. Try not to lose focus of that, everyone.
