Default Are older bands destroying their legacy?

I'm sure this will get a lot of responses like haters gotta hate. But I'm a pretty straight shooter. I really wanted to like the new VH and tried. My gut reaction was pure disapointment. Then I liked it and I'm back to pure disapointment. When usually my gut is right. I just see bands like AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, U2, The stones making music these days and it's about money and kids are not getting a good idea of what these bands really were.

Listen to Ain't talkin about love or Mean Streets.

I realize these guys are just older and it's not the same. I'm not here trying to relive some thing from my childhood like some have suggested about people who are disapointed. I get it. It's a bunch of guys just making music and enjoy it no big deal. But my honest opinion is it's not very good.

I sort of wish VH would stop making music now and let us remember why this band was actually good.

The orginal was great. The Hagar years were great.

I guess this is the world we are living in though where it's about making money and sacrificing integrity. It doesn't exist any more.

And how lame are people who can't take a difference of opinion just because someone doesn't like something???

We wonder why the music industry sucks these days though. It's because people accept less than perfection to make a dollar, and it's like haters gonna hate blah, blah. I wish VH would just hang it up and never play a song again after hearing this.

Eddie's a hypocrit at this point. He used to always talk abotu Page and how he was sloppy and that Dave couldn't sing those high parts anymore. But yeah.

I'm not sure what you mean. How did they sacrifice their integrity? Do you think they had a supply of hits in one pile and a supply of mediocre songs in another and said "screw it. Let's just put the mediocre pile on a record? Do you think they did the record too cheaply? Is that your point?

Bands grow up. Radio advances and doesn't want to play the aforementioned bands anymore. AC/DC hasn't changed a thing so I don't see how they can damage their legacy.

Forget the kids. They're spoonfed everything in the media these days and aged rockers aren't a part of that. Take it from someone in that generation, if kids are interested, they'll scope it out themselves. That's what I had to do.

It goes with my theory about music today. There's great stuff out there, just gotta find it.

Band's legacies are pretty much set in stone if they keep going, ala' Bon Jovi, U2. Van Halen was murdering their legacy but a good album could erase all that. They seem to be in the right direction these days.

so to review, when they do nothing they were horrible and didn't care about their fans, and when they record new music they're destroying their legacy. Great.

Van Halen is NOT destroying their legacy. Hopefully, they're fixing it. For the last 15 years, the band has become a joke. Much in the same way GnR have become. Eddie's erratic behavior. Letting porno's being filmed at his house. Kicking out an original band member & replacing him with his son. Not releasing much new music except for a few songs on a greatest hits album and a couple of songs on a porno soundtrack. FINALLY, the band has gotten back together and have released NEW material. Regardless of how the record sells, the fact that they're making new music as a band AND touring behind it can only improve their legacy and imagine.

I don't get that at all. That's why this thread puzzles me.

They were destroying their legacy since VH3 with some lame tours and a few crappy songs. Now that they're actually taking things seriously and trying to revive their image, they're destroying their legacy?

It just doesn't make any sense.

    Yawn.

Yeah, absolutely I can tell that from the first song released.

Cause, you know, every other song they've ever done is just a masterpiece. So yes, let's take the first single off of an album that you haven't heard, and compare it to two of their all time classic songs. That's makes all kinds of sense.

    Overreact much?

Why? If you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it. However, there are those that do like it, so why should they be deprived of new music because you didn't approve?

If you don't like it, then don't listen to it.

I never hated anything as much as VHIII, yet it never would have occured to me to ask the band to stop making music because I didn't like it.

This is ridiculous, in my opinion. These guys are professional musicians. In what other profession do we demand people quit doing what they love because it isn't the same as their previous work?

They might never do anything that compares to Fair Warning, but guess what? That doesn't remove Fair Warning from your collection.

Do what you love, do it with gusto, and do it as long as you want. That's my motto.
