I wonder if it's the original Gang tho. Heard they have a new bass player.

Is this for real? Kool and the Gang opening up. Not that that is a bad thing, just odd. That has Dave written all over it. Should be pretty funky and will add to the vibe.

    That's correct. It's their guitar player's son.

    I still can't believe they're serious; it's a bit too Lollapalooza.
Never would I imagine hearing "Sunday! Sunday!! Sunday!!!
Van Halen with special guest... Kool and the Gang!!!!"

Maybe they just wanna school Wolf in some ole school funk.

Great tune. Didn't the Fresh Prince sample that for one of his songs, I think it was called Summertime?
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I hired Kool & The Gang for a private party last May (2011). They were fantastic for the event. Kool was still very strong and they now have many great young musicians who still have an edge/energy. It was a 500-person black-tie type party/dance. They were perfect. Really had a nice R&B groove going all night.

With that being said, I don't think it will work in an arena when trying to build energy for a Van Halen show. They just don't match. They can't do arenas any more.

Don't get me wrong, they are a fantastic R&B, party band. Killer entertainers, still. BUT, They do NOT build the kind of energy you expect before a VH event. They are a dance/party band you would expect to kill it at a wedding reception.

They essentially play disco tunes. Come on people.

Exactly. Van Halen is a ROCK BAND! They should have some up-and-coming (or even somewhat established) young rock bands supporting them on this tour! In 2004, they took Shinedown on the road, and NOW look at them! They blew up since then! Also, Silvertide, who didn't really "blow up", but they rocked pretty well!

Before that, on the III tour, they were supported by a bunch of bands, like Fuel, Creed, Kenny Wayne Shepperd, Jonny Lang and Monster Magnet - who all rock (to some degree or another). But Kool & The Gang? Jeez.

I know that, on the 07/08 tour, (an probably, again, under the influence of the Diamond one,) Ky-Mani Marley and Ryan Shaw were openers, so that fits more with the Kool & The Gang kinda motif, but... I dunno. Can't we just go to a bad-ass rock show without all the "doo-wap"/soul/funk/disco shit?

Come on, Dave! Gimme a break!

In fact, just to come up with some better ideas, how about bands like AFI, Airborne Toxic Event, Anberlin, Black Tide, Cage The Elephant, Crash Kings, The Donnas, (Duff McKagen's) Loaded, Finger Eleven, Hinder, Jet, Jimmy Eat World, New Politics, Rise Against, Saliva, Seether, Shinedown (again!), Sixx:A.M., maybe SLASH, Stone Sour, maybe Stone Temple Pilots, The Temper Trap, Volbeat, Wolfmother... (just to name a few bands that are on my Spotify plalists at the moment).

But what would be a crazy, impossible, dream-come-true? CHICKENFOOT! (This is in an alternative universe where the guys in VH made their peace with Sammy & Mike.) And then everyone could come out at the end of the show and do a few songs together! Imagine that! The original lineup - Dave, Eddie, Alex and Mike, plus Sammy, plus Wolfie... plus Joe Satriani dueling with Eddie! What a crazy cool way to end a show!

(And then, $100 bills would rain from the rafters on everyone, all the babes at the show would throw their backstage passes away and come home with me, and Eddie would single me out and say, "YOU! You're my biggest fan! I can tell! Here's my guitar - I want YOU to have it!" THE END)
