Default Al's kit at the Cafe Wha?

Man I wish someone just filmed him. How rare to see his work up close on such a small kit. Out of everything that happened that night, that had to be the most like the old days.

    Al is an underrated player.

I wouldn't say he is under rated. Most players will acknowledge how good he is.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

i agree, i think he is more underrated in the fact that i think he influenced a lot more players than people realize.

imo he is better than neil peart (who is fantastic, but everyone is always on his jock)

In high school my jazz instructor was complaining about how drummers of the era had lost the ability to truly feel along with the music as they played. The exception he had heard was Alex Van Halen. I hear Alex's jazz influence (from playing with his dad) on a lot of the VH stuff--especially when they recorded without a click. I love how big his kick sound is. I love that kind-of-Bonham-but-still-his-own snare. I love how he made Roto Toms sound amazing (1984, "Humans Being"). And I love his cymbals. When I set up my recording studio kit, it will have Paiste cymbals. AVH is somehow able to ooze feeling in rock songs when he plays even his cymbals. He's not underrated in my book.

I tell anyone who asks that Al is my favorite drummer and biggest single influence. A lot of what he does is more difficult than it sounds... And I mean getting the songs to groove and feel right. Try playing along with Al on drums and you'll hear what I mean!
