Default Jump in D and Db

Like most non-casual VH fans I could go forever without hearing Jump again but the thing that makes it worse is the key change that has accompanied it since its live return in 1991. I was at the first show of the '91-92 tour in Atlanta (which was entirely too loud as an aside...yes it's possible) and when the first encore started it actually took me a second to place it. It was up a full step in D and decidedly tinny sounding. Eddie riding an open D string and hitting various open harmonics on it confirmed the change. The tune is already bordering on saccharine and the treble is even more pronounced when modulated up. I figured it was done just to put it more in Sammy's tenor wheelhouse so whatever.

Fast forward to 2007 onwards and I expected Jump to return to C and match DLR's original range or even be tuned down for his aged voice. It's no secret the original lineup was detuned a half step in most songs aside from the keyboard songs. Instead they're still playing in D but down a half step, i.e. Db. And DLR is thus straining a bit more on it and it's still a bit shrill. I understand it's easier to just keep the detuned instruments out there and play it instead of swapping out gear for a standard tuning but I'd argue playing it down in B would be a better option.

Long story short: Jump sounds better in its original key or lower

Hagar in '95 (in Db also...can't find '91 D version):

That's why Jump has always sounded off key to me live, it was.

I have to give Gary credit though, best setlist they have ever had outside of the VHIII tunes, which they of course had to play.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Yeah, always sounded godawful in the Hagar days when they played it in D.

Also Panama always sounds off in regular tuning as they did it in the Hagar days too, it's half-a-step down on the album. ATBL isn't so bad. To this day I think it's terrible that they only did literally 5 or 6 DLR-era tunes with Hagar... talk about turning your back on your fans and ignoring your past.

Say what you like about Cherone but he brought back the likes of Mean Street, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, Romeo Delight etc for the first time in decades.

I dont have anything against Gary, and your right he did help bring back some of the old songs. Their is some good stuff on van halen 3. Fire in the hole was a good song, it just was a huge let down after the supposed reunion.

You know this thread goes to show something ive always felt, if you change the tuning on a guitar you cant play every song. Ive been playing for 15 years and ive had countless arguemments with people about this. Ive always been a standard tuning or eb nothing more. I have some friends that play in D, not drop d, bit d and other friends that play in c. Some songs just dont transfer.

I suppose the key change live has something to do with it but I always attributed it to the fact that the original track and the live performances in 1984 were done on the Oberheim keyboard and that gave it the balls that it had. Whatever brand and model of keyboard Eddie has used since then just doesn't have that Oberheim sound.
