They are just recycling what every other report said and making it out to be far worse than it actually was.

Said that when Roth was talking too much during the show about his EMT days that McEnroe and Fallon thought it might end the band again.

    Non-issue.

You don't have to pay to read it. Just hit cancel on that app window and you should be able to read the article just fine. But in short, they made a big deal out of the fact that Roth was jabbering on and on about nothing for several minutes before Wolfie & Eddie started making some noise indicating it was time to rock and he told each of them to hold on a minute.

The article says people in the audience thought they were about to watch the band break up again right before their eyes. It certainly didn't seem that way to me when I watched the video. I saw the band waiting pretty patiently and then eventually politely trying to nudge Roth back into the music, which they did successfully.

Personally, I think Roth has some kind of disorder where he actually loses track of time and any sense of a through line for his speeches. (I mean, have you tried to read his book!? Jeez!) It's a gift and a curse in that it makes him say some really witty, clever and funny things and write some really original lyrics on a regular basis, but God help us all when he starts going on a rant and pissing off his band mates. I really hope the other guys in the band understand that this is not his giant ego or his intention to just sit there and talk to the crowd nonsensically for hours, but kind of a personality glitch - a slight malfunction of the brain and its chemistry - that simultaneously makes him annoying as hell and one of the greatest frontmen of any rock band ever.

    That's just my guess.

    Face, meet palm.

That said, I cant help but think what the rest of them are thinking when he.s going on and on. Ed and Al probably arent even listening, and Wolfie probably thinks, damn, i want to start my own band.

I kinda like his rants outside of the uncomfortableness of it all. Its total cheese and probably 99.9% Bullshit, but i still like it for some reason.

    article:
Stadium rockers Van Halen bravely took their act to teeny club Cafe Wha? on MacDougal Street on Thursday night, to kick off a highly anticipated reunion tour — and their first album with singer David Lee Roth since 1984.
But unpredictable Roth — who famously feuded with guitarist Eddie Van Halen and the band — went on a rambling rant at the start, and some of the 250 guests became nervous that the group was headed for another split before their eyes.
After the reunited band opened with the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” Roth bizarrely began bantering about Lady Gaga, asking the crowd, “Which one of you knows Lady Gaga? I got to meet her. One New Year’s Eve I spent at [Lower East Side club] Piano’s, before the spotlight found her . . . This was seven years ago, when I went back to school to experience some of the college [bleep] I never did before.”

He then reminisced about living on the Lower East Side, working in The Bronx and Brooklyn as a paramedic, and even spending a New Year’s Eve at a Dunkin’ Donuts.
But when bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, 20, son of the band’s guitar god, Eddie, started playing to signal him to shut up, Roth snapped, “Hold on one sec here, kiddo!” When Eddie followed suit, Roth said, “Hold on here, fellas!”
A few guests in the crowd, which included Jimmy Fallon and John McEnroe, later said they feared the tenuous bond between Roth and Van Halen could snap. But Diamond Dave settled down and kicked the group into a blistering 75-minute set.
Roth’s remaining repartee turned alternately clever (“The last time we stood on a stage this low, we had to have the car back by midnight”), naughty (“Who’s got a shot? Hey, waitress, give me whatever’s in your hand, sugar!”) and touching (a tribute to his 92-year-old Uncle Manny, who once owned Cafe Wha? and was at the show). The band, which kicks off its 45-date tour Feb. 18, later partied with friends backstage.

What's wrong with Dave talking to the crowd ? That's what a good showman does . If you just want to hear the music stay home and listen to a cd.

Like Ed has said before, Dave is definitely "wired" differently, but at least he interacts with the crowd.

This is the NY Post we are talking about here, so I'm not surprised.

It is just Dave being Dave and I think Ed has come to terms with it. Us fans did a very long time ago. I would rather have someone energetic and passionate on stage then someone going through the motions. Besides, its also good to have a little comic relief in rock n roll. Ed looked like he was having great time anyway.
