He's the real deal...but he's not Mike...but we'll just have to live with it... I miss MA, but Wolfie doesn't suck.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

The dude rocked and will be a fresh sound to the current Van Halen line up.

Nothing wrong with Mikey. Would love to have him back, but Wolf has come into his own with flying colors.

Trying to make him sound like Mikey would be plain wrong. You gotta let a good musician like Wolf be a good musician on his own merits.

    A++++ performance last night.

As a bass player myself, I find his style very interesting. It is almost like he plays the bass like a guitar player.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, watching that video, wolfie did really well. I miss MA of course, and his backing vocals, but the kid proved himself big time.

Now that I can finally hear him, I have to say I'm impressed. I'm a bass player too (or did my username give it away, lol) and I always listen to the bass parts. I'm not usually a fan of players who use picks exclusively, but he did a good job last night. I like the aggressive tone too.

    Good for him.

Wolfgang didn't make any mistake and was definitely heard - no question.
However to say he's a great bass player is not accurate. He's a guitar player playing bass.
When I play bass, or I'm sure when Brett plays bass, we tend to play in that style.
You can especially tell with the fills he chose to play.

Also a lot of people are missing the fact that MANY VH songs need to be played with fingers on bass, not with a pick. Wolf plays EVERY VH song with a pick, which changes the dynamics in a pretty important way. Mike played 75% fingers, and 25% pick, as he's primarly a "fingers" type of player.

The last thing I want to say is watching Wolf, one had the sense that he had a considerable amount of freedom to play whatever he wants. Comes with having the proper Dutch last name, I guess.

I'm a fingerpicker myself (used a pick for a few years when I first started playing). No doubt Wolf's use of a pick is a stark contrast to Mike's fingerpicking. It does sound much more aggressive (and dare I say heavier). He's developed his own style, which I applaud him for. Can't wait to hear how he sounds on the record.

I always laughed at people who were criticizing his playing or claiming he "wasn't playing" on the last tour, based on freaking cell phone videos. Yeah, like they pick up all the audio.
I don't care how good a phone or camera is, if it's in the middle of the audience, it simply cannot pick up many individual sounds from the wall of sound that's coming from the PA. You ears can't at close range, either.
Also depends a great deal on WHERE you are in the arena. I've heard plenty of people that saw the same show claim the mix was terrible and you couldn't hear bass/guitar/singer and others who were in a different location in the same arena say it sounded great.

Much less some random fan holding up a cell phone camera and people trying to critique the sound or determine what someone is playing.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I just listened to the Cafe Wha version of She's the Woman where you can really hear Wolfie. He was very very very very good. Tight, amazing on those bass parts before and during the solo. Not easy stuff with great phrasing.

Do I wish Mike were in there instead? Yeah. Do I miss Mike's vocal? Yes. But Wolfie really earned his stripes in my book listening to that clip.

    Hats-off to Wolf.

Wolf's like his Dad. Not the showmanship like Mike, but focuses on the sound. Can't wait to hear the difference on the album.

***Agreed... I assume with all the rehearsing they've been doing over the past couple months that he's all warmed up. The pick usage does result in a different tone and feel, but he was playing some cool fills and chords on "She's the Woman". I'm an MA fan all the way, but I'm much more impressed with Wolfgang after hearing this than I was after seeing them in 2007.
So, I've seen these guys live:
    June 25, 1993 - Eddie/Alex/Mike/Sammy @ Pine Knob Music Theatre - Clarkston, MI
    Sept 03, 1998 - Eddie/Alex/Mike/Gary @ Pine Knob Music Theatre - Clarkston, MI
July 11, 2004 - Eddie/Alex/Mike/Sammy @ The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills, MI
Oct 22, 2007 - Eddie/Alex/Wolfgang/Dave @ The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills, MI
Feb 20, 2012 - Eddie/Alex/Wolfgang/Dave @ The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills, MI

    Lurker since 2002
