Default Best delay pedal for Van Halen?

Another question again for all those here that know much more than me

What is the best delay pedal for playing Van Halen and VH-type stuff? I'm not talking about Cathedral delays, but just the type of effect Ed would use in regular songs to build on the sound. I've been looking at the TC Electronic Flashback Delay because it offers so many choices, but I'm curious to know what you might suggest. One thing though- I don't want to pay an absurd amount for a delay pedal. $150 is pretty much how high I can go.

Check out the MXR Carbon Copy. It sounds quite close to the tape echo (echoplex) sound Ed got. Keep in mind though that the early era tone Ed got also had Sunset's echo chamber employed to his sound, but you can get this closely with a deep reverb. It's pretty damned good and goes anywhere from $120 to 149.99.
That's the one I'd suggest, but there's plenty of modelling based echos that emulate a tape echo very well too, and for quite cheap. They just may not be built as durable or roadworthy as the MXR.

I want to like that pedal, but every demo I've seen/heard, the player is showcasing more of the extremes and Pink Floyd-esque sounds. I haven't found one yet that shows how it works with a hard rock lead sound. And I know what you mean about the reverb. You can definetely hear how important that is to Ed's tone on songs like Panama and so much of VH1. I'll look for a good and cheap reverb pedal, but for now the built-in reverb on my Blackstar keeps me content.

That sounds really good, but it's out of my price range.. Maybe I can afford one of their t-shirts.

In my experience, anything BOSS is good. But, I actually got a Line 6 M5 stompbox modeler because it was around the price range of most good delays, and I figured, why not? I'll have delay and many other effects. I just can't use them but one at a time is all, but, it seemed like a no-brainer to me. Oh, and the delays are good on the unit. I probably couldn't be happier with the purchase, really.

Yeah...Actually by 84, recorded at 5150, they were using analog reverb, not the chamber, but it's cool sounding. actually a little more understated.
I know what you mean about the demo's...It's tough to find a good YT demo with delays.
All I can tell you is I tried it out and kept it real minimal more to Ed's settings, and it sounded quite good.
YT vids often show the extreme of what a pedal can do which often doesn't translate to what you want in real world usage.
The DD-3 was mentioned too, and that's what I've had since the mid 90's. A very good pedal also, but to nail that vintage tone where the signal clarity decays with subsequent repeats, bucket brigade analog, or tape just can't be beat.

my Boss DD3 has been a trusty old delay for years and years. I would have none other. Sure its digital but it works great and does all VH from early sound to Cathedral and the newer stuff. Its pretty universal as far as I am concerned and its cheap and works well with my 5150

Cool that there are some strong recommendations for the Boss pedal. I would love to keep it analog, but I'll check out the DD-3 more and see if I can hear that much difference. Thanks!

The DD-3 is a great pedal and is fantastic for anything EVH 84 forward.
Didn't want you to think I was dissing the pedal at all. My assumption was his early tone and true authenticity which is what a lot of guys ask for.
Sorry for the confusion if I caused any. As I said, I've used my DD-3 for a very long time, and it's been very reliable, though I personally have moved away from it in favor of my Lexicon rack stuff, but for jamming and quick notice gigs, I still pull it out (er.....the pedal I mean) and it has never failed me.

Check out the Digitech Hardwire Series Delay pedal. Super clean pedal - built like a tank and a great sounding/versatile pedal. I have one on my pedal board exclusively for delays much like what Ed uses/used in the 88-95 era...

I've used a Line6 Flextone II amp for about 13 years.. had all the effects.. then bought a 5150 last year and went "oh fuck... I have no effects" lol... I've tried and own a bunch over the years... love the Carbon Copy in the loop! Out of any effect out there, the delay is my most important because I utilize it a lot in my songs... but I will say that I covered that bright ass blue light on it with electrical tape with a pinhole in it.... i love that pedal though! just sayin' But I do like Boss pedals for other effects.
