    Will Warner Bros. Cash In?

In light of this new activity from Van Halen, now signed with Universal, with an album to be released in February and supported by a tour; is it likely Warner Bros. will want to cash in? Are they able to cash in?

    If so how?

A new DLR era Best Of?
    Sammy era remasters?
Release the Warner Bros demos properly?
The shelved Toronto DVD from the Balance tour?
    Video Hits Volume 2 DVD?

    Thoughts?

This really could be a productive year for VH fans.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

It all depends on ownership rights. If WB has rights to anything, they'll likely put something together. VH Inc. would likely tie it up in litigation, though, if they catch a sniff of the project.

You would hope when VH split with Warner Bros, that VH would be able to release anything they want right now when it comes to demos, unreleased etc.

With that said, Warner Bros lawyers are probably the best of the best, so who knows.
    Right here I say....

I think we're really putting the cart before the horse here. We're all excited. That does not mean this is gonna translate at all to the general public.

Cart before the horse? How so?

I was wondering what Warner Bros, being the bands former label, may do to grab a piece of the pie no matter how small.

They may do something, they may do nothing. Thay may not be able to do anything, but I'm sure they'd love to get something out there to benefit from the bands renewed activity.

Me too and while they're at it, remaster the early Roth solo albums as well.

It really depends what kind of masters WB has in hand. If it's just the original tapes then it will be remasters. If they have unreleased stuff that was turned in with the original projects then we could get "expanded editions" of the original 6 albums. If VH has that material, it's entirely possible that Universal was given rights to it in negotiations for the new record and they will release "expanded editions" a boxed set or other compilations. Even the Beatles, when they left Capitol briefly were powerless to stop the label from putting out 5 compilations with NO input or blessing from the band. I doubt VH has better lawyers than the Beatles.

I'm sure they're gonna try. I mean, wouldn't you if you were Van Halen's former label?

Cash grab: that's how major record labels work these days.

Like I said, It just depends who has the tapes. If WB has them then they don't need VH to approve at all. When Capitol did the Beatles remasters a couple of years ago the vaults were pretty empty because of the Anthology series so you got straight up remasters but when the Pink Floyd reissues came out this year (and the band WAS involved) they opened up the vaults completely and you got the 5 disc Dark side of the Moon and Wish you Were Here reissues. We could only be so lucky. =)

Money is money. If WB can release something with little effort and expense and make money off of it, of course they will.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!
