Default Diamond Dave (2003) an underrated album

I just pulled out Diamond Dave and gave it a listen for the first time in nearly a decade. I remember liking it and feel that it's held up fairly well. It's a good collection of cover songs and I enjoy hearing Dave's take on Hendrix, the Beatles etc. The bluesy songs like "Made up my Mind" and "Stay While the Night is Young" sound great.

I thought that "Thug Pop," would have sounded better with a proper producer (sounds more like a demo) but is nonetheless a good song. It's kind of like a continuation of the DLR Band-era songs (John 5 co-wrote it).

No, not a classic, but it's a fun, off-beat colorful album and I think Dave fans would dig it.

Since Vai left I always thought Dave solo was a rudderless boat.

I bought the record and enjoyed the covers, but don't think the cd has much more value in it. Like a boring meal.

I enjoyed some of the songs.

To me, the Savoy Brown covers were like new tunes, as I had never heard the originals. And I think they fit DLR's voice and delivery very well. Best part of the disc in my humble opinion.

The Doors cover is excellent, however, the Beatles and Hendrix covers were pretty poor.

Thug Pop is a demo, he should have re-worked it with the current band he had at the time, as that was a really good backing band and the song was decent.

The Big Band version of Ice Cream Man? Eh. Novelty song. Neat to hear once and then never listen to again.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Loved "Shoo Bop," "Thug Pop," and "Stay While the Night Is Young." The rest was good and all, but I thought it definitely could have been better. The songs he chose for "CFTH" even aside from the obvious ones--the hits--were much better choices for him I think. Some of the songs he's done in the past, some of the songs he did on his acoustic Radio Rodeo, and some of the songs from the "No Holds Bar-B-Que" would've been better choices: "Tin Cup Chalice," "When It's Love Time," "Shine a Little Love," "Flex," "'How About a Little Fire' Scarecrow?," "Baker Street," "Lido Shuffle," and especially "Living in America"--would've been an ideal Dave cover. Always thought the original "Shine the Light" was a great tune, too.

Yes. Excellent! And generally speaking, I have little use for the Doors stuff.

The album is what it is. Dave having alot of fun doing what he wanted to do, alot of covers. People were upset that it wasn't Fair Warning, part II.

In my opinion, this is the absolute worst record released by anyone associated with Van Halen ever.

I like this album. The production is top notch and Dave sounds cool. A few of the songs are a little lame, but I really like "You Got the Blues, Not Me," "Stay While the Night Is Young," "Soul Kitchen," and "If 6 Was 9." When bands do cover albums, I usually cringe, but thanks to this and Def Leppard's "Yeah!" I was introduced to some awesome lesser-known older songs.

Wow. This thread just reminded me that I am approaching the 10 year anniversary of me starting to like VH. I remember reading a review of this album in some magazine back then. Also started playing guitar in the fall of 03 as well.

Fuck. I was 14 at the time.

I enjoy Diamond Dave, even in it's uneven moments.

And how can anyone not love SHOOBOP!
=Fantastic video. One of his most colorful.

    ShooBop

It even starts with the same dance moves he did in Tattoo.
Has playboy bunnies and midgets prancing around Dave's house.
    How can you go wrong?

Especially love the kendo sequence. ('',)b

I think he should have done "Shine a Little Love" and "Baker Street" from No Holds BBQ. (BTW, although it is not a masterpiece, it is fun to watch after a few cocktails.)

BTW, "Strummin' with the Devil" was far worse than DD.

It's pure schlep / Vegas strip stuff but there are times when I kinda like that. I admittedly did not buy it when it came out and only stumbled across it a few weeks ago checking iTunes to see if ADKOT was out early or not. I wasn't a fan of the whole thing but I did like "Shoo Bop", "You Got The Blues..." and "She's Looking Good".

"SLG" was, IMO, what he was going for when he did his Travis Tritt duet on "YFLM". To me, that song never did anything or went anywhere. Hearing "SLG" though, at least today, there's something a little more...ah, what's the word...pure? Innocent? Typical? It sounds like Dave being Dave, perhaps starting to forge down the road / realization that the VH boat had sailed.

Thankfully, that proved to not be the case and all seems right again.

For what it was though at that time in everyone's career, it was OK. It's not something I'll listen to with a lot of frequency but like the occasional / seasonal flavor that comes around once a year (ie: the McRib), it'll be a nice diversion.
