    Default School bans ‘Secret Santa’

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. -- The principal at one Newburyport elementary school is putting an end to a holiday tradition, outraging some parents.

“I can’t understand why they would stop that, adults love to do that too,” said Wendy Morrisette, a Newburyport resident.

For fourth and fifth graders at Edward G. Molin Upper Elementary School a holiday party will have to suffice after the principal decided it was not fair to children that do not celebrate Christmas to hold a Christmas gift swap.

Parents said they were upset the tradition was being cancelled.

“She was really happy to do it; she wanted to, it’s a fun thing to do. I guess they don’t think that it’s right that there are so many kids that do celebrate Christmas that shouldn’t be allowed to because of maybe a handful of kids,” said Lorraine Sullivan, a parent.

“It’s Christmas, everybody should be able to celebrate it, I mean even if you don’t agree with that, we have Kwanzaa, we have Hanukkah, so why not?,” said Dawson Lazdowski, a Newburyport resident.

In a statement the superintendent said, ”The ‘Secret Santa’ activity which was scheduled to take place in an individual classroom was not consistent with the school’s holiday ‘theme of giving’…’I am proud of the way the principal, staff, students and families have embraced the culture being developed at the Molin School.”

After repeated calls and attempts to reach the principal, 7News was told she was in a meeting.

Parents said they hoped ‘Secret Santa’ would be brought back next year.

Once again...the spirit of christmas is sucked out of society even more. I understand that not every single kid in the school is going to celebrate xmas but a BIG majority of them are.

How is the Secret Santa activity not consistent with the school's holiday "theme of giving"? The last time I checked, Santa is a secular symbol not a religious and it's the people themselves giving the gifts. STFU and let the people GIVE!

An aside - We have neighbors up the street that are atheists. They have 2 school age kids who are being brought up as atheists. I respect that, and their son and my son are good friends and play together very well. Their kids got toys from their parents on the first day of winter to celebrate the "solstice". I have no problem with this as I believe that freedom of religion also means having the freedom not to believe. BTW - their son is one of the most well behaved kids I have ever met.

Looks like they should have been a little more secretive. Then this wouldn't be an issue.

Well, seems to be this is less about being an athiest and more about being an overly PC douchebag in a position of power.

I'm an athiest and i've been wishing people Merry Christmas all weekend.
