Default Is this a steal? 5150 head and cab

    http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/msg/2765024342.html

Never heard one up close, but I seem to remember hearing good things about the first ones. I really have no business buying this, but it seems like a more than fair price...

From what I can tell, yes, It's a good buy.
To get the best from a 5150 you really need to crank it though and if you need a clean sound then forget it.

Buy it. I paid 500 for my 5150II head alone.

That is a GREAT deal. It's very hard to find a Block letter 5150 head for under $600 alone. And the block letter versions are the most collectable since they were the first production run. There is NOTHING different about the circuit -- just the front logo, but people seem to think they are 'better' and are willing to pay more for them.

Also, if that speaker cab is a first run 5150 cab, those ARE different than the later ones, and sound a LOT better.

Yeah if it works fine that's a great deal!
I paid $500.00 for the head used from Guitar Center in 1995.
And i think i got a slant cab new for 400.00 in 1996.

Actually, now that I look at the pictures again, I can't tell if it's a Block letter or signature head. Either way, it's still a GREAT deal -- what I said above still applies. It's the exact same amp regardless of the logo on the front.

The first run of 5150's have the letters "EVH" right under the lights on the front in bold, block lettering. The rest of them have Ed's signature in the same spot instead.

Oh, on my 47" tv that is also my monitor, it looks like the signature, not the EVH letters...

Definitely get this amp if it's working well. That's a fantastic deal.
It's pretty tough to tell if it's a block letter or not...it looks more like script like the sig, but no matter. They are the same amp.
Our Peavey rep years ago did say that by mid first run, and further they did use some upgraded parts that they had minor issues with in the effects loop footswitch/remote input circuit, and some caps that had the odd failure.
It happened in both mine and a friends block letter 5150 and they were fixed under warranty.
Like others have said, unless you're looking for the versatility of a true dual channel for a good clean, then you'll love this amp.

Yep -- absolutely correct. That circuit of course, has no effect on the actual tone of the amp -- just switching reliability (mine sometimes doesn't switch like once in a thousand times, and you have to hit the pedal twice... no big deal at all.)

The other change I'm aware of is that they started using a few 350volt instead of 400V rated caps in some of the later models' power supply circuits -- again, no change in component values and no change in tone whatsoever.

The biggest difference was the fact that the early ones shipped with NOS Sylvania or GE 6L6 tubes... which are probably the best 6L6 ever made, period. That accounts for the folklore surrounding the 'complete change in tone between the block letter models and signature models'. It was just a simple tube swap which changed the tone.

You'll love the amp if you do get it -- and if it needs a retube, if you'd like, I could point you in the right direction of the tubes I really like. (I've tried about 10 brands, and many different models of tubes in my 5150)

Thanks for the advice guys. I'd like to get it but I think I'm going to pass.

I already have a full marshall stack with a JCM 800 and a full Orange stack with a vintage Orange OR 80 head...
