    Default Ed Roman Died

    Holy Shit!!!.

    Ed Roman died...

Guitar maker and luthier Ed Roman — who has worked with a number of influential artists during his career, including Ted Nugent, George Lynch, Billy Gibbons, Keith Urban and Rick Derringer — has passed away. A posting on Ed's web site reads, "We understand that many people have questions regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing. His death, however, is still very recent, and is a heartbreaking shock to the family. We ask that you please be respectful of the sensitive nature involved with losing a loved one, and the mourning process that follows."

A more formal announcement from Lindsey Star Roman is forthcoming.

According to KissFAQ.com, Roman worked with original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley as far back as 1989, performing some modifications to one of Ace's Les Pauls. He also built a replica of Ace Frehley's Washburn AF 40 guitar. Roman once described Frehley as "probably the most influential guitarist in the history of the world."

His website rants are entertaining if nothing else. Even more entertaining are the stories from pissed off customers. Everyone seemed to either respect him or loathe him.

Now that i think of it one of the very first things i looked at when i first got online in 1997 was his website.

I don't think it ever changed.

    as far back as 1989?!?

I know it's over 20 years now, but it's hard to think of as "far back"!

    Rest in peace, Ed Roman.

Wow! Strangely enough I was just thinking about him this morning.
Was online looking at CL, and saw an ad for a Transtrem tremolo, and it reminded me of a conversation we had last fall where he was saying that a particular trem I was looking at was x amount over the going rate. I remembered how pissed off I was at him for trying to squeeze squeeze like he did.
Oh well. I do regret his passing from a personal point because we'd sometimes talk guitars, and he still had a passion, and when you weren't trying to get a deal out of him he was a pretty congenial dude, and pretty funny.

I kind of equated what he did to the guitar market to what Barrett Jackson did to the classic car market in a way. Once a certain type of guitar commands a particularly high price from a sales guy like Roman was, everyone started demanding the same inflated prices, and it trickled through the entire market both new and old.
RIP Mr. Roman. You were a hell of a salesman.

the times I dealt with him on the phone he was an absolute arrogant jerk who charged insanely overpriced. I stopped dealing with him back in the early 2000s. Never stopped checking out his website though. Who knows maybe others had better experiences with him than I did. Either way, sorry to hear it.

I had a coupla phone conversations with him and got a Jeckyl/Hyde sorta vibe. Once he talked to me for an hour or more about VH, who really built which guitars, etc etc etc. The next time he want double the reasonable price for an old Kramer and was nasty about it. Met him once in his store once, he was nice enough there. I hate it for his family, especially this time of year.

Okay, maybe not. Overpriced, maybe, but one heck of a luthier. Rest in peace, Ed.
