Default Something weird about VH's claim he didnt even have the neck pu wired up?

I have looked over many pics of the frank in its numerous states and the pics of it after the PG was removed you can see the front pu's wire channeled through the cavity to the pot area? WHY WOULD HE BOTHER sending that wire to the pot if he didnt even wire it
and ever since he has made a sig guitar it has ALWAYS had a neck pu?
and one other thing that made me wonder is that the B/Y charvel which did not have a neck pu at all had a tone pot or some kind of pot wired up in the cavity along with the regular vol pot??? one thing for sure ED was a very mysterious guy with gear!

You know what I think man? I think you're right. I'm pretty sure he did run a tone pot for a while until he nailed his amp's sound. (there are threads over at the Marshall forum showing various parts value lists of Ed's Marshall which alledgedly prove his tonestack had been altered slightly, and what was believed to be an external bias control on the back which was since eliminated) I think he probably just rolled the highs of slightly for some live performance, maybe depending on the venue or if he went to a backup amp if a tube or tranny blew. He did say repeatedly that he was never satisfied with the B&Y's sound, and tried a sucsession of pickups in it. Keep in mind the late 60's Marshall sounded a lot more rounded, mid accentuated, and many of the laney's and Marshall JMP's of the 70's seemed to adopt a very shrill darker tonestack by comparison. My 76 Marshall was earsplitting until I had some cap mods made.
Even the Frank in at least one pic I've seen where he had no pickguard and just that little jack plate had what appeared to be either a tone pot, or possibly even a second volume in the cavity which could also explain your neck pickup wired up theory.....maybe.
Or he was just trying to throw people off of what he was using.
Jeez....if Ed went out trying to keep 'em guessing....Mission accomplished.

I am pretty sure there was a selector switch wrapped with black tape in front of the volume knob as well.
There is a thread with several pages at the Metroampforum about this. At one point, they even had video of Ed moving the switch and the tone changing. It's been awhile, so you may have to search pretty far back to find it !

Here's an earlier picture that clearly shows the switch in a different position...

Haha! i have that pic in an old collage poster I've had since I was 13 or something. I'll take a shot of it and post it tomorrow.
Also....When I was going through some boxes, I came across a big ol'e picture book about VH. Many pics in that I've never seen any where else to. I'll post some of those as well.

sorry about not getting the pics I promised up last night. Our internet went down for hours.
Anyway....Here's some pics. Johnnybeane mentioned the book, so some of you very well may have it too, but there's a few shots that i personally have not seen online, so here's a few. i took them with my cam for now because the book is a bit too large for my scanner, but if there's some you like, I'll try to scan them for you. Just let me know which ones.

A great shot of the setup we were talking about with the three p/u's installed with selector switch.

This one I did shoot straight, adding here it went sideways...Not sure why.

That pic of Ed with the B/W original strat is my favorite of those you posted.
