Woman dies in FREAK Elevator Mishap in NYC

Woman dies in freak NYC elevator accident

    (AP) – Dec. 14, 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman was killed in a freak elevator mishap Wednesday at a Madison Avenue office building, Fire Department officials said.

The accident happened at around 10 a.m. in a 1920s office tower near Grand Central Terminal that has been the longtime home of advertising agency Y&R, formerly known as Young & Rubicam.

Fire officials said the woman was stepping onto the elevator on the first floor when either her foot or leg became caught in the closing doors. The car then rose abruptly, dragging her body into the shaft and killing her, officials said.

The elevator then became stuck between the first and second floors. Two women who were on the elevator were taken to a hospital to be evaluated for psychological trauma but weren't physically injured, Fire Department officials said.

Investigators with the fire department, the police department and the city's buildings department were on the scene in midtown Manhattan. The name of the victim was not immediately released. Fire officials said she was 41.

A spokeswoman for Y&R, which announced just days ago that it planned to vacate the building for a new headquarters, confirmed that there had been a fatality but said she couldn't yet provide additional information.

The company is among a number of tenants in the building.

Officials initially said they thought the elevator had fallen two floors.

    ---------------------------------------------

I have noticed that, if wearing spiked heels, that women's shoes could possibly get stuck in the opening between the elevator doors.

There's a door open button inside the elevator that will open the doors quickly if they have not closed fully. But, on each elevator, that "Door Open" button is a different shape, in a different place... So, it's not so easy, on the fly, to find and press the door open button, in a split second or two.

Just seen a documentary on elevators and they said there is traditionally one button that is always there but doesn't work. That is the close door button . Only there for psychological purpose .

I remember this same thing happening years ago to a well known attorney in Toledo Ohio.....he fell as the old fashioned elevator in the building (I'm thinking the Spitzer building) and from what I hear it was a gruesome thing

happened about 5 years ago to a student at Ohio State as well

elevators still scare me...especially those old fashioned ones with the pull shut grills that you sometimes see in historic buildings

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

That's horrifying! I panicked at the thought of dying this horrible way, that poor woman My fear of elevators I defeated when I was 11 has now returned.

My fear of escalators is still very much thriving within me, too.

Me too!! My dad once locked me in a revolving door in Chicago when I was a kid, I've been petrified ever since! He meant for it to be a joke, but it completely scarred me. What's the problem with old fashioned swinging doors?

I know where you're coming from with this one - going up is fine but the down ones are terrifying - it feels like you're just launching yourself into thin air. I literally have to count, breathe deeply and time it really carefully whilst gripping the handrail like a drowning (wo)man. Bloody awful things.

Also, does anybody else feel weak and lightheaded when they get out of a descending lift (elevator)? I don't think it's a psychological thing but something to do with the speed of the descent - sometimes when I emerge from them my legs feel like they want to give way. Truly horrible.

When initially reading about this tragedy, I focused on the elevator floor, thinking that the victim's foot may have somehow gotten stuck. But, last night, I looked at the opening of the elevator door where I work, at the top, and there, I noticed that at the top of the elevator, there is no plate, like there is at the bottom entrance of the elevator.

At the top of the elevator entrance, there is an opening of maybe six inches all the way across, that could unfortunately allow a person to be sandwiched in between, with the force of the elevator quickly moving up, with the doors open.

There were other people already on that elevator. I can't imagine nor would I want o imagine what they saw and heard. They were in the elevator for hours.
